Google Support says Pixel audio issues are related to the hardware

Google’s Pixel smartphones may be considered the best Android devices available right now, but they’re certainly not without their issues. One of the handsets’ reported problems involves audio distortion when the volume is at its highest level. This was initially thought to be a software problem, but a Google Support specialist says it’s related to the hardware – which is much more serious.

Last month, Redditor Mark “badmark” Buckman posted a video (above) of his Pixel and Pixel XL exhibiting a popping, distorted audio when using a piano app with the handsets’ volume cranked all the way up. Other users reported experiencing the same problem with music and videos played at maximum sound levels, and some sites were able to replicate the effect.

The problem was thought to be software-related; Google even said it would release a patch to address the issue. In the meantime, Buckman posted a “fix” using a third party ROM, which you can see here.

However, an email conversation between a customer and a member of the Google Store Support team reveals that the audio distortion is a known hardware fault present in “a select build of device,” though they didn’t go into specifics. It seems the fix merely restricted the speakers from reaching their maximum volume, thereby stopping the distortion from occurring.

The message also states that Google is not currently offering refunds for the issue but it is covered by the warranty service, which means replacing the affected handsets with new ones that, hopefully, don’t suffer from the same sound problems. But without Google releasing more details, there’s no guarantee that the replacements won’t also have audio distortion.

Other reported Pixel problems include purple shade and random artifacts affecting the cameras, LTE connectivity problems, battery life issues on some models, and numerous reports of the phones suddenly freezing and becoming unusable.

Google, you continue in disappointing me....
Make them unibody so you can't fix them and you have to replace them completely....but you don't want to do that...bravo !
Maybe if the Note 7 battery would have been expandable the device would have not been extinct.
Learn something from all this !
In other words, to buy an expensive device with a bug and a company as big as Google to not want to replace it with a new one...it does not deserve its customers.

To readers using headphones, if you read this before watching the video, I recommend turning down your volume to avoid going deaf or getting a ear ache, as I did. :(

Someone definitely got fired on behalf of that email.

On other news...

Quite disappointing for their first "Google" phone. Should have kept using other manufacturers to make Nexus handsets for them.

Let's let Google focus on fulfilling the preorders from November before replacing phones...

Still waiting on my XL.

Where is the legion of google-behind-kissers reviewers who jumped to praise this iphone clone based on politics and synthetic benchmarks?

Where's the Apple fanatic who comments on every single Android/Google article with a snotty remark about non-iPhone enthusiasts?

Oh, there you are!

Except that I am not an Apple fan, I never owned an Apple product in my life and don't plan to. Do you feel stupid now?

Nothing changed since the nexus line. Google is just terrible in hardware department. Just take a look.

I dont see how google is terrible at hardware, when THEY didnt make it. HTC did. And anybody who paid attention to the nexus line knew this was going to happen. Remember the nexus 9?

The LG and asus built nexus devices were solid performers, as were the motos.

And now, in the last paragraph, here is a whole slew of known issues with the devices.

I just can't figure out how the Pixel is considered 'the best' Android phone right now. Seems like it is in last place amongst the flagships, and that Google should stick to software - or at least let the companies who know what they are doing design-wise actually design and build it, and just slap the Google banding on it.

Google does nothing about spout about how they 'designed' the phone. Everything I can find seems to point to HTC just being the ODM and not the OEM.

The guy's updated video shows that a change of ROM fixed the issue; so, it's software-related.

Just because it can be fixed with software doesn't mean the issue isn't hardware, it just means you can hide the problem with software.

Seriously, whats wrong with the warranty service...? AFAIK google pays for shipping on those and everything.

Edit: I forget not everyone has a backup phone sitting in a drawer to use for 5/6 days.

If all of the phones had shipped with proper software, keeping the volume below distortion levels, would we have said there's a problem? Certainly not :)

Now if speakers were to completely fail after some time we would call it a hardware problem.

Are you illiterate? It says in the article that it is being covered by warranty. That means you send it in & they send you a new one... The way every other manufacturer warranty works...

Pretty crappy of Google for not offering refunds.

I have hearing problems and clarity of sound is of ultimate importance to me. It is hard enough to understand what people are speaking to me are saying. When I buy a phone I buy it for the quality of sound reproduction, NOT for being able to take pictures or watch videos.

Thanks, we've established that.
Actually - I currently own a Nexus 6p; previously I had the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 second generation. Last non-nexus smartphone I owned was a Dell streak. They are by no means flawless but I am/was happy with them because ... UPDATES AND REASONABLE PRICE VS. SPECS. I will never buy a samsung or other vendors for the previous reasons. Don't want to be stuck with a crap I know will never be updated and I already know that it has several vulnerabilities which will never be patched.
Now all they (Google) could do in the next nexus iteration is this horrible iphone clone. Because this is it: very similar design, nothing to write home about in terms of specs and overpriced hardware. And I recognized the aggressive Google PR to promote this crap from the very first reviews - like the best smartphone camera on the market - ARE YOU KIDDING ME? how low did those reviewers bend over to take the Google Pixel inside?
