Great games that don't need great hardware to run

well damn that's very good for a Williamette :p That's half-way to risk running on a P3 (well the 512KB Tualatin variant might be possible then :p I've seen that processor smoke 1.8 Ghz P4's back in the day...)

Amnesia The Dark Descent

Actually PlanetSide and Amnesia: The Dark Descent have some pretty big requirements for your system, amnesia runs pretty smooth on most computers but I would not recommend a laptop to run it, most of them unless its designed for gaming, it gets choppy and lags about every 10 minutes for a while. Also I would NOT run PlanetSide on any computer that isn't pretty nice/designed for gaming because games like PlanetSide and planetside2 take up lots of ram and can slow down your computer quite a lot, but if you do play it I recommend you use Low graphics quality for it. Another game that doesn't require a good System would be League of Legends. But make sure you get an FPS of around 20-60 because otherwise you will lag and probably die. Hope this helped :)

Actually Amnesia: The Dark Descent doesn't have big requirements as I mistakenly posted in my last comment, but I would recommend a good computer for maximum game play quality.

A game that I think is supposed to be able to play on old computers is Ace of Spades. I found this game a long while ago when I was looking for a free alternative for Minecraft. While I was doing this search, I also was trying to find a game that would run on my old computer that has a SiS graphics card. Thanks to this article, I found AoS, and ever since, I've spent a lot of time playing this game.

P.S.

I game on my old Precision workstation 670 all the time, though its not really to much of a slouch, I find that all of Valves games work very well on the system, it can even manage BC2, and I decided to try BF3 on it later this week. It amazes me what this computer almost straight out of 2005 can still do, only upgrade I have done is add a 1tb HDD in it and upgraded the graphics back in 2009 to a 9800gt.

The Precision series are Dell's premier high-end workstation series, after all.
yeah but we are talking 8 years old now, it was able to keep up in the benchmarks till like 2008-2009, but once the core I series got into mianstream no way. Still amazed at what it can do, maybe I am more amazed at how little PC gaming has changed in the last couple years, I basically owe thanks to the consoles for making it so I don't have to buy a new computer till at least the end of this year.

BIT.TRIP.BEAT and BEAT.TRIP.RUNNER
There are loads of Indie games that are good and fun time killers...it's worth looking for the indie games on steam and then also most games on Desura ;)

Thanks for the link, I found it really helpful in my search since I love Minecraft style games. Just an update for everyone that Ace of Spades has an official Steam release now but you can still play the original game (for free) on buildandshoot.com (I much prefer the original).

I also noticed the article you link to has links pointing this to page with over 50 games like minecraft most of which also have low requirements which I recommend gamers check out if they like the building style of gameplay.
