Great games that don't need great hardware to run

This is fantastic. Thank you for putting all this together. Saves so much time for me. (Kinda regretting trying to upgrade my laptop now or I could download some of these).

:)

There's one thing that just came in mind, what is not great hardware these days really? Some may consider that Intel P4 and above is great hard ware and some may think that everything with 4Gb RAM or more is great...and then of course everything under is not so great. Personally I tend to think that even this laptop isn't so "great" anymore since its GPU isn't that good anymore. There's a few great games which don't run on that computer, or at least they don't run with the default settings, not even with the lowest settings.
There's one game in particular that I'm thinking of, Payday 2, it doesn't run "out of the box", there's a huge mouse lag and it barely gets up to 15fps in the main menu on the lowest settings. However there's a tiny mod which changes the shadow map resolution, I added it and now Payday 2 is very playable on the laptop in question and I also bet that it will run smoothly on other computers which aren't as "good" as this.
Therefor I suggest to add Payday 2 to the list with a note to add this mod.

How about the free MAME arcade emulator. Minimum spec is a P3 and a directx 5 capable graphics card. That would add 20,000 more games on to your list.

Only the games listed on the MAME site are what you can legally play for free. That limits you to only about 20 ROMs, unless you buy more games.

Regardless, emulators will remain off the list. This is a list of PC games, and I intend for it to stay that way.

That may be, but a PC with the specs I've put in my original post will NEVER run stock Skyrim; the game won't even launch, most likely.

I suppose at some point you're going to need to update the system requirement standard for this games list. You started this thread back in 2006, and back then a 1.4Ghz pentium 4 paired with a 6200 was already reasonably accessible; however, it's almost 2015 and nowadays modern integrated graphics chips can make mince meat out of any of these games....heck, some of these games are already playable on phones!

You're right. But that's gonna be a pretty major overhaul, and the list will probably grow by leaps and bounds.

One of these days...maybe. ;)

Lord of the Rings online(LOTRO) is another one, along with Neverwinter, and Rift which are all available on steam.

Door Kickers
I play it on an Acer W500 tablet.
Race the Sun
Lords of the Realms 2 works on Windows 7.

I don't know if anyone but my friends and I would consider this a "great game" but I've recently become rather addicted to a game called Tanki Online. You can check it out here. I'll be willing to play with anyone who is around Sergeant rank.

Try play Modern Warfare 2. Same engine. Same Frame rates. I also play a free to play MMPORG golf game if you like that stuff that is really good. Google Shot Online. It's not a hardware pig at all.

Ok, if you are able to run Dark messiah then u should be able to run Titan quest+immortal throne as well :)

I recently played Grim Fandango remastered. Such a good game. Soon I will be playing broken age 2, also great game that dont require great hardware.
