GTA Trilogy patch addresses performance and stability issues across all platforms

Why it matters: Rockstar Games has released a sprawling update for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that addresses performance and stability issues across all platforms. The patch also fixes numerous individual issues in each of the three games in the collection.

Rockstar launched GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Windows last November. The bundle, which includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, arrived with much anticipation but fell short of expectations due to a buggy landing.

Some players that purchased the PC version were unable to play it, prompting Rockstar to remove it from their online store. Physical versions of the game for consoles were delayed by more than a month. Rockstar even relaunched individual versions of the games included in the trilogy and offered early adopters a free game.

A series of patches followed, the last of which – version 1.03 – arrived in late November. The new 1.04 patch should hopefully iron out most of the remaining wrinkles. The full change log is too extensive to list here, so you'll want to check out Rockstar's post for all of the details.

Despite the rocky start, GTA Trilogy has seemingly sold very well. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said during an earnings call last month that the game had “significantly exceeded expectations.” Game Rant estimated Rockstar sold at least 10 million copies as of early February.

Rockstar also recently confirmed it is working on the next major installment in the wildly popular franchise. While you shouldn't expect it to arrive anytime soon, you can at least take comfort in knowing that GTA 6 - or whatever it'll be called - is in the pipeline.

Anyone else completely forgot this trilogy even existed until literally right now with this news item? I'm gonna say not a good look: if anything Rockstar succeeded at making a case why we need to force companies to support historical versions of games instead of trying to get rid of them with remasters.

Ooof this game was a dumpster fire on release in an obvious cash grab from Take Two, would be interesting to see it re reviewed now but it should never have been so poor to begin with.

BY DEFINITION it can't be a cash grab it was ported to another engine, it's the opposite of quick, easy and lazy. Damn, the ignorance of some people...
Yet, was it released before it was ready? Yes, it was.

There's spelling mistakes throughout the game, characters just look off, do you know why?

Because it was basically auto-imported by an AI. They didn't actually re-create much, this was an extremely low effort and incredibly lazy remake.

Just check the videos on YouTube or read a few reviews, this was lazy, the modding community had done a better job years ago.

Sorry bud but where you getting your definitions?

As its slang, there's not an official definition, but the common theme is 'make money quick, without care for the product' and this definitely meets that criteria. It was mostly done by an AI, with dodgy character models, bad textures, holes in the world, removing certain features like the cinematic camera.
Good they're taking the time to fix it now, but it was certainly a cash grab and if backlash wasn't overwhelming they probably would've left it.

I'm sorry but if you think a game, let alone porting a mobile game to the desktop can be done with "AI" you have no idea what you're talking about.

It was literally an AI upscaling the mobile version, people have re-created it to prove it and did you not wonder how the game suddenly had way more spelling mistakes in?

Techspot did a few articles on this and it hasn't got the lowest Metacritic score of all time ever by accident.

Edit: I found the quote:
"It was revealed that originally GSG attempted to rebuild some of the main buildings from scratch, such as the main characters' houses, but noticed a discrepancy in quality compared to other buildings. Some assets were improved from the original games, while others were ultimately rebuilt entirely. The team then used an AI program to upscale the textures before making manual adjustments; producer Rich Rosado estimated that over 100,000 textures were changed"

So basically it was very lazily "remastered" and as admitted by Rockstar themselves, wasn't worth it. It really was just a cash grab.
