GTA VI's rumored $100 price tag sparks debate among gamers and analysts

Highly anticipated: Not for the first time, an analyst within the video games industry has predicted that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch with a previously unheard of price point: $100. Not only would it make the most anticipated games in years exorbitantly expensive, it could set a precedent in which other companies start charging more than $70 for AAA big releases.

The latest prediction that Take-Two will charge $100 for GTA VI comes from Michael Pachter, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities.

Pachter wrote in a research note, "We think the company has plans to sell the game at a previously unheard of price point, and suspect that management can offer consumers an incentive to pay $100 or more per unit by rewarding them with a large amount of in-game currency to be spent in GTA Online."

Pachter wrote about the benefits of integrating an online experience with a premium game, highlighting how Activision did this with both Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile content prior to the release of its annual Call of Duty main entry, which led to a 40% increase in sales of CoD. As such, he believes integrating GTA Online and GTA VI and offering in-game currency for the former can justify the $100 price point.

It's hard to imagine gamers feeling a $100 price is fair. Many people have never played GTA Online even though they love GTA V, and it's likely they will feel the same way about the sequel. It would be more acceptable if Take-Two offered a special $100 edition of GTA VI that included bonuses such as in-game currency for the multiplayer element.

It's worth noting that Pachter has a long history of controversial predictions, many of which never came true. He once reportedly compared PC gamers to arrogant racists, suggested the Nintendo Switch would sell poorly, thought Activision would charge a subscription for CoD multiplayer, and said the Xbox Series X would launch at $100 less than the PS5.

However, Pachter isn't the only analyst to predict that GTA VI will cost more than the standard $70. Matthew Ball of Epyllion wrote in January that the game could be priced up to $100, something he hoped would happen as it would lead to other companies increasing the prices of their big games.

It's been five years since the first major game to carry a $70 price tag, NBA 2K21, arrived, signalling the beginning of the end for the standard $60 AAA price that had been around since the launch of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era in the mid-2000s.

With the console launch set for this fall, Take-Two still hasn't confirmed when the PC version of GTA VI will get here, though Corsair believes it will land in early 2026.

Rockstar doesn't really do text chat anymore so I don't really do Social Club anymore. Not a fan of backwards development. Also, their online "experiences" are always infested with cheaters and modders. Haven't played a Rockstar game in years, won't be buying this one.

So the game will actually launch a year or two after it's soft launched, so the price can come down to something a bit more sensible, and of course, launch on PC.

Nope, I'll buy it on sale years later and be just fine, I didn't get GTA V PC until 2021 when I found an unopened box copy at a clearance retailer for $15, I don't do MP so it doesn't matter if I wait a bit.

I refuse to pay more than $40 for any game, if that means I wait a bit so be it. I wanted Mass Effect Legacy Edition and I got it from prime gaming for free instead of the launch $59

This is what killed GTA V for me, all the bloody cheaters ruined it.
and it'll still break records,

gamers only have themselves to blame for how things are, they go along with any terrible idea thats tossed in front of them,
Sadly you're right but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have self control.

we know nothing about gta6 really, but looking at gta5 and how it handled online my assumption is that it will be as bad or worse monetization wise,

BUT, if rockstar releases info and says that wont be the case(or its gonna have sp content) then imho 100 for it..........isn't terrible, ive had gta5 installed for years, countless hours played, its been worth the money.

you cant blame rockstar for aiming high, they know people are thirsty af for that game, they watch gamers push f2p games to the top of the charts, theyve watched people buy gta5 multiple times, they know the money is there so may as well go big right out the gates.

No debate here, I ain't buying it for any more than $10 (which might mean never, and I'm OK with that).

Wish more people would flex their market power, but I know that's a lot of ask of dopamine addicted lyfestyle video gamers.

You guys are all talking as if GTA 6 is going to be comparable to anything, it's not. Nothing will come close.
I doubt it'll be $100, these $100 GTA articles are just to rile people up and bring engagement to the site.
I imagine it's between $60-80.

The only ones talking as if this information has any truth to it are analysts and investors, who also totally made it up, who are also often wrong in their predictions. They made it up because that's what they want to happen, not that it could happen or that it might, it's because a talking head from an investor/analyst wants the general price of ALL games to go up because they don't play them they just want to squeeze every little cent they can from consumers.

I'm sure Mr. Pachter has a nice amount of TTWO in his portfolio and is closer to 0 hours than 100 in GTA V. He still has E3 listed in his company bio as if it still goes yearly.

Ah, problems with PC gaming. Never been in a lobby with a cheater on Xbox 360, PS4 or PS5 for GTAO...

Fact, no game is perfect. To not play something because of 1 or 2 things you don't agree with would make buying a game hard, I hate to live in that world lol

It's almost like you don't understand economics. It's called inflation. They have invested a huge amount into this game and it will pay off hugely. Best game ever created is about to be released imo.

- It's almost like you don't understand economics. It's called consumer agency. As a consumer there I have agency over what I choose to buy and what I don't. I am free to assign whatever value to any consumable product that I choose and quantify that value through currency. If my perceived value is lower than the value set by the producer of the consumable, then I don't buy it.

That's cool. You can do that, no problem.

Just going to be that gif where everyone is having a time of their life on the game and you'll be watching youtube videos of it lol the FOMO will kick in then.
