Half-Life 3 may finally be real - new evidence suggests it's nearly complete

Highly anticipated: The "Half-Life 3 confirmed" catchphrase might not be around for much longer. There's been a slew of speculation that the 18-year wait since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 could soon end, and that the mythical Half-Life 3 is in the final stages of development.

Getting fans of the iconic FPS series excited is Valve's new update to Deadlock, its third-person shooter MOBA. Buried within this update is a mention of HLX, which is widely believed to be an in-development name for Half-Life 3.

HLX has appeared in other recent updates for Valve games, including Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2. What's different on this occasion is that it appears alongside a mention of FSR3.

Valve watcher Tyler McVicker believes that if AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling technology really is being used in the HLX build, it would be a sign that development is nearing completion.

"You don't use FSR until you're nearly done with a game. Those AI post-processing systems are not supposed to be used for development," he notes in a video on his YouTube channel.

There have been other signs that Half-Life 3 will be with us at some point this year. On New Year's Eve, Mike Shapiro, the actor who voiced G-Man and Barney Calhoun, posted a video in which he says he hopes the next quarter-century delivers as many unexpected surprises as the previous 25 years. "See you in the New Year," he promises. The post also uses the #Valve and #Halflife hashtags, which appear to be more hints as to what's coming.

McVicker also dove into the recent Dota 2 update. His datamining uncovered a new set of code in a file called AI_baseNPC.fgd, which is not actively used by the popular MOBA. It includes references to machinery and alien blood, which are believed to be related to Half-Life 3. The code itself relates to a common optimization technique in games where AI complexity and behavior can be scaled based on distance from the player, something McVicker says is further evidence of Half-Life 3 development nearing completion.

The latest discoveries follow reports from reputable leaker Gabe Follower in December that Valve had been conducting friends-and-family playtesting for HLX over the previous few months. McVicker believes the discoveries since then suggest the testing went smoothly, and that an official announcement might not be too far away.

There have been rumors and claims that Half-Life 3 was close to completion for many years, all of which turned out to be false alarms. But the sheer number of signs over the last few months strongly suggest 2025 will be the year that the long wait ends.

If the reason for making this game is to bank on the hype of HL3 it's almost certainly going to suck. Sometimes it's best to end on a high note. I would like to be wrong though.

I don't even care. HL2: E2 released 20 years ago and it sucked. E3 never came out to finish the episodic trilogy. Because of this I stopped caring about HL several decades ago.

Will this game even matter at this point?

The only thing that could happen is disappointing everyone.

It would be great to finally get a resolution to the story cliffhanger from 17 years ago, but I'm not getting my hopes up until it's officially announced. Valve cancels projects at all stages of development, there's no real reason this would be any different.

Fingers crossed this one makes it to the finish line though.

I wonder what will come first Star Citizen beta or Half life 3? 😅
CIG/RSI "suggests" that Squadron 42, in some playable form, will release in 2026 (mountain of salt)... HL3/HLX may or may not beat that, but Star Citizen in a module complete beta format... yeah no way I'd take a bet on that ha ha.

I've finally given up waiting for Squadron 42 and SC as a whole since my primary driver for wanting to play the former won't be around to play with me... but I'll still play it when it (staying as optimistic as I can) does out of principle and hopefully enjoy it.

Not needed anymore. It's like DNF or Star Citizen: If you make people wait for too long, some of them eventually will move on. Even if they started as fans.

The when-its-done-mantra is not working on me anymore. We all waited long long years for this and Valve ignored us. Now they seem to think, we can start this relationship over with a statement. And HL3 won't be that good to convince me to wait another 20 yrs or so for HL4, so I'll skip this particular title. In fact they can go and shove... :)
I'll stop here. Lot's of interesting games coming in 2025 anyway.

2 cents. Needed to vent this, sorry.

I actually went looking how they were doing with SQ42 after a long while and was actually blown away with that CitizenCon 2954 Live Gameplay Reveal! They made a lot of progress. Looks really good!

What I'm hoping for is an all out war against the Combine. Hopefully a trip to the Advisor's homeworld.
The last 45 minutes of Half Life 2 where Gordon and the resistance wages war against the combine soldiers made the game worth every penny. But there wasn't enough of it. I'm not anxious to be stuck in tunnels and sewers solving puzzles with water and barrels. I'd like to see Half Life 3 be more like CRYSIS 1. They got it almost right in Ravenholm but then they stick you right back into the sewers for more puzzles.

On a side note: I originally played Half Life 2 on XBOX. It's shocking that the Xbox was capable of running that game - even in reduced fps.

55 y/o me is hopeful!!

If it has "DOOM, QUAKE, or HALF-LIFE" in title I'm there. Same with Duke Nukem...even with how horrible Forever was.. I still got some joy of it.

Doom, Quake, Half Life and Duke Nukem were all "ego shooters". Very good level design (probably the best ever) and very strong personalities from the protagonist.

They also had memorable enemies and characters.

Modern gaming sucks because we don't have these things.

Damn! I'd be lying if I said this news didn't make my heart race... I still remember, it was November, and HL2 was the birthday gift from my friends. I remember being drunk and spending that same night installing it from a CD-ROM... It took ages... But was well worth it!
