Historians are rejecting the work of YouTubers that upscale old video footage to 4K

They should stop at repair- forget about upscaling and coloring, it actually makes it look worse and greatly increases the fake-ness!!!

I am really fascinated by those videos. Suddenly, the past becomes a reality I can relate to. I am trying to imagine how I would feel living at this point in human history. Intriguing! "Historians" can keep their copy of old unusable footage.

Well I bought Dune on VHS. Then it went to DVD (was this mono?). Stereo version. Then Wide Screen 5.1 Channel. Then Blu-ray. There's probably more options. Directors Cut?
If someone didn't do this then I would have never watched that old footage.

Amazing to see. thanks for posting this article. I'm not going to join the hate crowd, hating on the historians like so many others. I'll just enjoy watching these restorations and subscribe to that YT channel, I hope to see more!

I would love to see a very complete analysis of what exactly is being "changed" and to what extent. There is something to be said for keeping the original product for it's historical significance, but there is no reason now to have the upgraded product as long as nothing is significantly altered.

We live in a time where there is a great deal of effort to alter history for personal reasons rather than preserve it, analyse it, criticize it when appropriate, but to destroy it based upon biased opinions, regardless of how many, is unfair and unjust. If, for example, it is a statue of questionable value, rather than destroy it, surround it with statues that present "the rest of the story". Children will learn a more complete history this way, and have a meaningful understanding of the evolution of time and how it affects and is affected by those in the present day.

Look, statues honoring people who kept my ancestors as slaves for hundreds of years, then fought a war to KEEP them as slaves can go straight to the bottom of hell with an express ticket.

You really should take that chip off your shoulder. This day and age, you have nothing to be so angry about. The only thing you are accomplishing. Is keeping that which you are fighting against very much alive. I'm not racist but I hate everyone going around and remove historical landmarks. It doesn't matter what they did or why they were commemorated. It is a part of our history. And judging by your attitude it is history, we very much need to remember. Because you are unintentionally bringing it back.

Gosh-kers, I just had a ban lifted, so I probably shouldn't touch this with some one else's ten foot pole. But. as they say, "fools rush in"
How about listening to some nice music to sooth all that bitterness that is so fashionable to display these days?

Would it surprise you to know that Little Richard covered that song?

But what the hell, it's Saturday night. how about we go out have some fun?

Why don';t we cut loose, hit the town, burn down a building or two, loot a liquor store, and top off the night by being tear gassed. Hey, don't let anybody say we don't know how to have a good time.

BTW, the movie camera wasn't a practical reality until nearly the turn of the 20th century, a good 30 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. So, I don't think you need worry about "talkies", being up-rezzed from the Antebellum South.

The thing is, those statues went up in the 60s as a f u to the civil rights movement. I was like hmm about it until I learned this little tid bit. Also you don't see Germany with statues of Hitler like, oh that is part of our history.

Funny thing though, Vlad the Impaler is like renowned in "someplaceistan" even though he was one of the most ruthless c of all time. <--- dont get this twisted, just a thought

Really? The 60s must have been a lot longer ago than I thought:

California: " lawmakers on Tuesday ordered the removal of a century-old sculpture of explorer Christopher Columbus..."

Kentucky: "The 107 year-old [bronze statue] of Confederate Solder John B. Castleman has been removed from Louisville...."

Minnesota" "protesters used a rope to topple a 90-year-old statue of Christopher Columbus..."

Virginia: " A 131-year-old statue was removed on June 2. The statue, named "Appomattox," depicted a southern-facing Civil War soldier..."

Wisconsin: " A 95-year old statue of one of America's fiercest anti-slavery activists has been decapitated and dragged into a lake..."

North Carolina: " Rocky Mount has approved the removal of a Confederate statue that has stood for more than a century...."

South Carolina: "The monument [to be removed] has sat in front of the courthouse since 1909."

Alabama: Demonstrators at Linn Park attempted remove a 115-year-old Confederate monument"

(note: this post should not be construed as opposition to removal of these monuments. Some should be; some shouldn't. But it's important to have the facts straight.)

In point of fact, Josef Stalin likely has the all time record in body count. Nobody really knows how many of his own people he killed as, Nazi sympathizers, at the conclusion of WWII. I'd lay money that there are multiple likenesses of him scattered all over Russia. I wonder if at any point in history, his followers looked on him in admiration, possibly referring to him as, "The Josef".

Hell, here in my home town, we can't even keep our statue of Christopher Columbus. Goodbye Robert E. Lee I can almost understand, but that "CC" dude? It's gotta stop somewhere.

Carried out to a hyperbolic conclusion, the Egyptians should be tearing down the Spinx any day now Only the wind knows how many people were enslaved and died while building it. But then again, look how much money it brings in as a tourist attraction, so they'll probably keep it around.

Our languages change over time, and words change their meaning. Take the "N word" for example. In today's most prevalent context, it's a term of empathy, identification, and unity. And before I forget, look at how many rap artists rake in huge wads of cash, using it at least once every sentence in their biased, extremist, and incoherent rantings..

I could go on about how the more radical members of the BLM movement are "racists'. But strangely enough, I wouldn't even be allowed to whisper such a thought in public.

As for statue removal and the murder of George Floyd, I think they're both dreadful things. But it would seem the propaganda machine won't let you "split your ticket" so to speak. You have a nobleness oblige to denounce the existence of the statues, as well as the death of Mr. Floyd.

In my "hometown", the police have had to react with lethal force, a small number of times. But, in point fact a huge preponderance of gun deaths have been black on black civilian actions.

The closet extremist in me wants to scream out, "why don't you clean the sh!t out of your own nests, before you take it upon yourselves to rewrite history". Wut? Too radical?

TL;DR?

Most would probably think that a good thing as Dune was a hot mess.... of course, I still have the blu ray so guess I’m also a fool :)
