How do I scan email attachments

I'm not too computer savvy. I received an exe file today from my soon to be ex husband that was supposed to contain only a one page document. My email client warned against opening it. It says it was unsafe. Is there a way to determine what if anything is in/attached to the file without opening it and infecting my computer?

Thank you in advance.

You can upload any file (or exe) here: http://www.virustotal.com/
That site will immediately tell you if it's infected

By the way, most Antivirus softwares are set to scan incoming email attachments, what Antivirus are you using?

Also Outlook has been set by default not to open suspicious files (ie exe) This does not mean that it is infected though.
