How to remove windows.old after installing W-10

D

DavidBailey

I installed Windows 10 Pro the other day.
It contained a windows.old folder. (Large)
I made several system images with Macrium Reflect of the new install.
(Each time I altered things I backed up.)
I did not intend to revert to 8.1 Pro using the revert option in W-10.
So I decided to delete the windows.old folder.
W-10 jerked me around trying to take ownership of it.

So I Googled ways to remove it.

I found this cmd -

RD /S /Q %SystemDrive%\windows.old

to be used in an Administrator cmd prompt.

windows.old will go away !

Back up your system before doing this.
Back up your system after doing this.

I hope this helps somebody.
It gives you more free space on your computer. :)

Hi thanks for your thread. I'm glad to see you are using Macrium Reflect. That's the best recovery you can have. Knowing you can restore back to the time you created the image. I wish everyone would take the time to learn how to create backup images with a 3rd party image program. At least use the back up image feature in windows. Here's how to use the feature.

I don't leave mine plugged in either.
Sometimes I have to wait a bit to remove it safely.
Of course, one can shut the computer off & safely remove it.

I've read that page before.
I still like to get the pop-up saying it is safe to remove a drive.
A Note--- I had to add a new take ownership reg file to get it to work on W-10.
