How to wipe a hard drive

I've been trying for hours to format this laptop so I can drop it off at a local recycling place, how do I do it? Thanks

BOOT from a CD or a thumbdrive.

Then select the device (be ABSOLUTELY SURE!), like right-click and choose FORMAT but NOT THE QUICK version but the full - - this will rewrite every sector and clear everything.

Once done, delete the partition as an extra step

Well, I think I messed up but since its going to be recycled, I think I'll just be smart & remove the harddrive. Problem solved, thank you for your help.

@jobeard thanks, but as it turned out, neither the CD/DVD drive or USB drives worked properly so I somehow managed to do a system restore that did a weird restore Long story short, I removed harddrive anyhow.

Remove HDD. Slug with hammer 3x. Recycle old HDD. Donate what's left.

LOL, great idea, bit I'm going to try to remove the disc to combine with other drives I have to make some wind chimes for friends
