HP and Asus are moving PC production back to China as soaring component costs force a rethink

What we know so far: When US-China trade relations reached an all-time low last year, many global electronics manufacturers made a beeline for alternative low-cost manufacturing locations such as Thailand, Vietnam, and India. However, with skyrocketing component costs squeezing profit margins, some of these companies are reportedly shifting at least part of their PC manufacturing operations back to China.

According to Nikkei Asia, American PC giant HP and Taiwanese consumer electronics firm Asus have already moved some of their manufacturing operations back to China. Another leading PC OEM, Dell, is also said to be evaluating whether to follow suit and shift some of its PC production back to the Asian nation to offset rising component costs.

The renewed preference for China as a PC manufacturing hub underscores broader, systemic pressures gripping the global electronics supply chain. According to the report, PC makers expect that moving production back to China will allow them to leverage established infrastructure and benefit from lower input prices than those available in alternative destinations.

The resurgence of China as a hub for PC manufacturing also highlights the challenges faced by emerging low-cost destinations, both in terms of pricing power and infrastructural readiness. The move would also likely delay the much-hyped return of domestic electronics manufacturing to the US despite the announcement of several financial and other incentives.

Following the imposition of sanctions and tariffs on China in 2024 and 2025 by both the Biden and Trump administrations, PC makers started to look for safer destinations in countries that have a friendlier relationship with the US. While Thailand, Vietnam, and India emerged as potential alternatives, none of them have established supply chains or expertise in mass manufacturing, unlike China.

It is worth noting that PC makers are not officially discarding their stated goal of diversifying manufacturing operations beyond China. In fact, many are even buying memory chips from Chinese companies like CXMT instead of from established suppliers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, largely due to the significantly lower prices they offer.

The report noted that the shift back to China is adversely affecting the suppliers that invested in Southeast Asia. An unnamed manager at an unidentified PC component supplier told the publication that the company built multiple factories in Thailand for its PC clients, but now he doesn't know whether they will ever become profitable or instead have to be written off as a one-time loss.

Great theory, but what does that have to do with ASUS moving their production as well? Rising component and production costs are a systemic global problem, it's not just an "American greed" situation.

Well, ASUS isn't an American company, so I'd say my opinion stands. Weird question.

Americans turned everything into an investment and made the cost of living skyrocket and therefore, wages to account for the cost of living. China is not a fully capitalist country and lots of the stuff that lead.yo higher living costs and higher wages never happened in China.

Most of the world is experiencing the results of late stage capitalism. China, while full of their own problems, has not done much of the nonsense we have here.

Well Americans can't have it both ways..

Americans can't have the jobs and at the same time enjoy cheaper prices, because at the end of the day someone has to get screwed...the question is who?...the employer or the consumer.

In another words, Trump lied to you!

That makes no sense. American greed makes a taiwanese company require Chinese salaries? What?

So is your solution to do nothing, fall further into debt, and hope the Chinese give us a loan?

That's your mistaken interpretation of it. Mine is, I have no problem paying higher prices, to keep companies in the United States. and Americans working... The only person lying or mistaken here, is you.

Sadly you are in the far, far minority, otherwise most people wouldn't be ready to dump Trump while seeing the Republicans desperately scrambling trying to stop their eminent losses in Congress.

We can resume this conversation on November 4th....lol

The solution is to pick one...

let corporations charge you far more for the basic things "Made in America" or return to the good old affordability...but you can't have it both ways.

Dont worry, you wont win anything ;)

American greed from nonsensical tarrifs and the AI bubble caused by American companies causing PC OEMs to move back to China.
So is your solution to do nothing, fall further into debt, and hope the Chinese give us a loan?
Well forcing tarrifs clearly didn't work.
The way things are going, China will have the complete tech sector and be ahead in consumer tech, while western companies are on track to take ownership away from the average consumer because their wet dream is selling cloud subscriptions.

If every company of that list was Taiwanese, my statement might be confusing, but Dell and HP are not. Those are notoriously greedy enterprises headquartered right here in the good old USA. I specified American companies so I obviously wasn't referring to the Taiwanese one and it's weird that I had to come back and explain that.
