HP Pavilion hibernation then?

I recently bought an HP Pavilion used. Here's the problem. The battery was getting ready to expire and then the computer went into "hibernation" mode. After plugging in the charger to recharge the battery and turning the computer on manually I encountered the following: The screen does not come on at all, but the computer "acts" like it's trying to start? The keyboard lights come on and I can hear the the fan start. After a few seconds it "restarts" itself and repeats this over and over. The screen never comes on through all this? Any suggestions? HELP!!! Thanks for all your replies
