I have a virus - dont know what to do?

  1. Hello

My laptop has a virus and I dont know what to do.

I have tried rebooting in safe mode, but it still doesnt do anything, goes past the little windows start up screen.....then onto the main screen, but I have zero icons on the desktop.....no start up panel or task bar or anything.....just the mouse-arrow in the middle of the screen.

I dont have a reboot CD either. I thought I could try and take the laptop back to an earlier virus-free time, but i cant even get into a programme to do that.

    Please can someone help me?

    I have windows 7

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help with the malware, but you have given me a minimum of information. I can help find the 'missing' items, but you're going to have to be clearer about whether you can get into the system at all.

Let's try this if you can't get into the system> I'm not clear on whether you tried this or did it correctly::

    Boot into Safe Mode
    • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
    • Select Last Known Good Configuration, which starts your computer using the registry information that was saved at the last shutdown.
Use the arrow keys to access this line when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
If you can get back in, run the following to help find the 'missing' features:

Download Unhide.exe and save to the desktop.
    • Double-click on Unhide.exe icon to run the program.
    • This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives.
Note: this does not removal the malware- just the rogue attribute that hides the features.
You should be up in Normal Mode now. If the above worked for you, go on to the following:

Please follow the steps in the Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal thread HERE.

NOTE: If you already have any of the scanning programs on the computer, please remove them and download the versions in these links.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
    • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
    • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
    • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
    • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
    • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
    • Observe these:
[o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
[o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
[o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
    • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.
If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.

    Hi Bobbye

Thank you, I have started the Comp, pressed the F8 button and started it in 'Last known good configuration' and pressed Enter.

It tries to start....I can hear something happening....but it just gets to the 'starting windows' screen....you know, with the red, yellow, green and blue balls and then it just stays on the Starting Windows screen, almost as if its frozen....it doesnt go any further?

    Many thanks

Doesn't sound very good- possibly hard drive failure.

You let the colored balls finish and then there is a slight pause before Windows loads- that's when you start tapping the F8 key. Are you actually bringing up the Safe Mode screen to choose Last known...?

Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get the timing right.

Hi there, thanks for getting back to me, as i mentioned previously, I hav done the F8 thing and got into the 'start up in safe mode etc' screen....I have chosen to start last known good configuration, and pressed enter....it then tries to start, but nothing more happens....its just stays on the 'starting windows' page with the little coloured squares.
