John McAfee backs out of promise to self-cannibalize if Bitcoin fails to hit $1 million

Recap: People were excited about Bitcoin back in 2017—the year when the cryptocurrency reached its peak of almost $20,000. Tech legend John McAfee was certainly optimistic about the coin’s future: he promised to eat his d*ck on national television if it didn’t reach $500,000 in three years, eventually changing that prediction to $1 million. It’s now 2020, and Bitcoin is worth around $7,700, but don’t expect to see McAfee consume his genitals anytime soon; he claims the whole thing was just a ruse.

Despite his name being synonymous with one of the world’s leading anti-virus products, most people know McAfee for his exploits outside of tech, such as being the prime suspect in a murder in Belize, his presidential run, and giving his opinion on pretty much everything. But his promise to eat his junk on TV if Bitcoin fails to reach one million dollars by December 31, 2020, has brought plenty of attention.

As noted by the website The Dickening (via TNW), Bitcoin’s price needs to increase around $992,258 this year to reach McAfee’s prediction. That works out at $2,787 per day. Surprisingly, the crypto has experienced equivalent growth surges in the past—in 2011 and 2012/2013, when its price was a lot lower—but it seems McAfee has lost confidence that his claim will come to pass.

In a recent tweet, McAfee said the whole thing was “a ruse to onboard new users. It worked.” Not surprisingly, this has invoked the anger of many Twitter and Reddit users.

It’s unlikely that many people thought Bitcoin really would hit a million dollars, of course, whether McAfee ever believed it is up for debate, but he does have a history of pulling similar ‘ruses.’ When the FBI was trying to crack the iPhone belonging to San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook—something Apple refused to help with—he said his team of mohawk-sporting super hackers with face tattoos could crack the handset in three weeks. He later admitted that this was a lie to bring more attention to the case.

I remember Fall of 2017 going into 2018.

Everybody and their momma talking about Bitcoin...Ripple... Tron... Ethereum... Litecoin...

Most of them had no idea what any of this stuff was and everyone was desperate to get in. Right about the time Bitcoin hit $10,000 we were assured it would be $100,000 by now.

Everyone trying to figure out how to mine bitcoin.

Restrictions on purchasing multiple GPU from Microcenter.

Fast forward to 2020 and Bitcoin is virtually dead. It's risen faster than Gold over the decade, but has been the most riskiest made all its real gains in a period almost 5 years ago.

It won't go to $0 simply because Early adopters refuse to sell.

It won't go to zero because it's how people buy and sell drugs on the internet
Given how much CPU usage mcafee eats on every windows operating system (I manage about 500 servers), I wouldn't be surprised if he is using the antivirus client to mine bitcoin in the background.

We have wasted thousands of hours and lost millions in business revenue and customers directly because of his antivirus. In fact, I have spent several days and finally figured it out it is mcafee that is corrupting this app I am trying to upgrade.
He no longer owns the company, he sold it years ago

He said himself he doesn't have anything to do with the anti-virus and he doesn't even recommend it.

He might be crazy or a genius I can't really tell. He seems like a really interesting guy though.

yRaz above already reminded me he doesn't have a part in the company. Be careful thinking someone is a genius because they have more money than they need. I've found it is quite the opposite for most. They often just throw money at a problem and have someone else do it.

I seen a study in the past days. People "invested' over 14 billions in ICO's alone... A dime won't be spend to enrich those people's lives. Enough money to build a city or fund a respectable company.
The guy mentioned, was also promoting some exotic coins.
Talk about integrity and moral values. What a comedian.
