Laptop Goes black, but why

Friends laptop , tried doing MS updates but it shut down, tried scanning with SAS, it shut down. By shutdown I mean screen suddenly goes black. Power options are set to never when on power.

Make & model? How old is system? Fan(s) work? Temperatures? Last cleaning? Have you tried to run with old battery out and just using charger?

Toshiba Satellite L500, Win 7 Home Premium service pack 1, age unknown. 4.00 gb ram, 64 bit OS. I'm guessing fans work, it boots up quietly & I don't think its on long enough to get hot. As I'm typing this on another laptop, its running on charger ONLY.
Will post back if it shuts down on its own.

I'm not the tech geek you are but I believe its a bad battery causing it to shut down. It has not shut down yet.

I'm "trying" to run scans in hopes I can continue getting the rest of MS updates before it shuts down, again.

I'm almost convinced its heat related for shuting down. Since its not my laptop, I'll talk to the owner to see what to do. I'm going to try to use a fan to keep it cool in hopes it'll work.
