Laptop only runs on AC power without the battery in the slot

i was facing the problem of the laptop compaque 2134 ad , abruptly shutting down and restarting , gicing blue screen with error msg on next restart ..... fan sound start stop with power light blinking etc ....... changed it with another old battery lying with me .... but the same problem .... then i noticed that ... with ac power , but no battery in the slot the machine is running fine ...... but with the battery in it ... it gets funny ........ please help me!!!

Buy a new laptop battery just like the one that originally came in the laptop. Don't trust old laptop batteries. They go bad just laying around
