Laptop sometimes pick up sound

I have an Alienware laptop that is about 2-3 years old and I use a steel series headset that is probably 5 years old. I haven’t had any problems with either love them both but recently I am having issues where my microphone is only sometimes picking up my voice. I did all the test and it says everything is working fine but when I talk to people they can only hear like half of what I say! Any ideas what the problem can be?

OrangeBandit The mic part is having normal wear and tear over the years, buy a new headset and get rid of your old ones.
Try sony headsets I use them for google voip and they're mics are good solid quality.

When I use the laptop microphone it does the same thing. Would this be the cause to both?
