Laptop won't boot in normal or safe mode

My Gateway MT6723 laptop will not boot up in normal or safe mode. I've removed the battery and the hard drive and reinstalled, but it goes to a black screen. I can hold the power down or ctl-alt-delete to reboot, but the only thing that appears is the Gateway screen, then it goes black. It will allow me to enter setup or bios, but not sure what to do after that. Any help is appreciated.

What harddrive is your Gateway using, i.e. Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi. etc.?

How old is this system?
