LG is preparing to release a smartphone called the V10 that’ll feature a secondary display, or “ticker,” above the main screen according to Twitter tipster Evan Blass. Photos of the device (above) have since appeared on TENNA, the Chinese version of the FCC.
The LG V10 is said to carry a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 that’ll be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 SoC alongside 3GB of system memory and 64GB of local flash storage. There’s also a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel selfie camera, a fingerprint scanner and expandable storage via microSD card slot.
Of course, the real talking point of the V10 is the secondary ticker display. The idea itself isn’t exactly new as Samsung tested the waters with a very similar implementation in its 2010 Continuum smartphone (and more recently, with its Edge line of Galaxy-branded phones).
On the LG V10, the extra screen is positioned at the top (notice how the camera and proximity sensor aren’t centered in the leaked image). Like other implementations, the idea is that you can use the ticker to view various bits of information without having to power up the primary display, thus reducing battery drain.
Smartphones have reached a maturation point where we’re no longer seeing the huge generational jumps with each new flagship. As a result, manufacturers are turning to new features – some would even say gimmicks – to help lure in buyers.
Blass claims the LG V10 will launch in early October.
