Licencing for Server 2012 R2 when doing clean install

Hi,

I just got thrown into a mess of a situation and I am not too certain about this issue. Guy I know ordered new server build (clean install) and wants Windows Server 2012 R2. I just got sent an invoice from the company that is doing that and they have charged him for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard - license and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard - license, a $1500.00 total. As far as I know when clean installing R2 you do not need other version, so he should be charged for R2 only. Correct?

Hello pioneerx01,

Its been almost a week since your post, hopefully you have resolved the issue.

That said, I have never encountered anything to that effect. Server 2012R2 is a standalone OS that does not require 2012. Are those links you posted the exact SKUs you were sold? Those are OEM SKUs which do have more limitations but again, R2 doesnt require 2012. Sounds like a billing mistake to me.
