Logitech CEO proposes a mouse as a service

"will be worn out"...
well, it depends on what is worn out and what you do about it
I still rock my Logitech Click! optical mouse (wired) and Logitech Elite! keyboard, since around 2007-2008, on my main PCs. The only thing that has worn out on the mouse is the paint on the part where I rest my palm and on both clicks, that's the only thing worn out on it. I keep another Click! mouse like new, almost unused, but with a faulty chip (a spring inside came loose and shorted something out), to use its parts as spares. That's how much I love this mouse.
And on my second PC, I've used a simple and cheap Logitech K120 for about 6 years and it's only had one problem with the space key starting to respond poorly to pressure on one side, but I fixed that too.

Back in the 2000s Logitech still made good products. My OG Logitech MX518 purchased in 2007, worked like new until 2020 and never had any issues, when one day it sadly just stopped working (not even detected by any PC when plugged, I even tried replacing the cable).

In the meantime I have purchased other Logitech mice. Not a single Logitech mouse I purchased after 2014, has functioned without any issues for more than 6 months, and most haven't survived more than 2 years.

Yeah, but they do require servicing, which costs a fair amount of cash. Having said that, at least your getting some actual work done for your money.
All mechanical watch require service every four to five years, Mine is 70's Seiko I bought used (in very low price). I doubt that Logitech will last that long.

I imagine they could make a more durable mouse with this feature in mind as planned obsolesce will be engineered out of it. Even still however if you are truly concerned about less e-waste then you should have done this from the beginning, at the very least on more expensive models.

My days of spending north of even $50 on a mouse are long over.. these things just don't last to justify it from a gaming standpoint. A nice cheep 12-button Chinese mouse from Amazon has worked great for me, yup $35.

And that's how they'll sneak that crummy idea through,

they know they have a massive customer base and they'll all grumble at the idea, yet all of them will give logitech that same benefit of the doubt and next thing you know it'll be normal.

this keeps happening, over & over & over again, because these companies know that people don't really have the spine to cut them off.
"And that's how they'll sneak that crummy idea through" - did I not just say that I won't buy it if they do implement that? "the benefit of the doubt" means that I don't believe they'll implement this, not that they'll implement it and only then we'll wait and see.

I had all Logitech mice and keyboards for a long time too. Finally shelved my G19 for a Corsair, then a Mountain Everest, and the mice for Roccat. Haven't looked back.
Roccat should be a good alternative, although I'll have to test it on my bed sheets since I use my laptop in bed :)

Oh ffs. What's next. DRM locked subscription model bum wad
No doubt asshats at HP and BMW.Would be 1st in line!

I have never abided by such DRM and actively defeat it they have zero right to Impose such draconian xrap on others while bribing politicians to ram through crap like the DMCA

Oh and since that draconian pole of crap is US only they can suck it!

Now they need just find/create a problem for this solution. I wonder how will they do it, it was kinda interesting for netflix or xpass, but they need to be much more creative here.
I only want them to bring g600 back, which wont happen.

Bring the Logitech G600 MMO mouse back!

Everyone wants to get a hook into your income, and I'm rather tired of the trend.

If Logitech goes this way, I'll look for something else. Their low-end mice are already crap that don't have the longevity of their gaming mice. I will never buy another one of their low-end mice.

This. Everything is becoming a subscription base service to where you are constantly paying money to these companies. I am also tired of this business model while every business is squeezing as much profit as they can from consumers

Even at only a dollar a month you can buy a brand new mouse ever 3 years. I am still using my Razer Deathadder 3.5G after 12 years. ( Never used their software.)

I'm wondering what people are saying about their keyboards. There's a whole lot of rubbish out there that are just bad design and even worse in build quality. I have a long lived logitech keyboard that several of the letters have simply worn away! I tried various sets of vinyl keyboard letters but as soon as they get warm the adhesive lets go.
They can send a probe into space but they can't even invent a reliable glue for vinyl.

The YT Louis Rossmann channel reports a LOT of corporate garbage like this, and it is getting worse. Some users are unaware that this drives a wedge into both the Ownership (and user control) of devices, ESPECIALLY those that need "cloud connectivity" to continue working, and REPAIRABILITY.
Such companies can turn off functionality at the flick of a software switch, forcing users to buy new, or pay for a higher subscription. Hardly conducive to "green credentials", but greedy CEO's only care about revenue streams, and bottom lines. This behaviour needs government intervention!
