Lucas Arts Outlaws PC Game

I hope someone out there remembers playing the old Lucas Arts Outlaws PC game.
I came across a CD-Rom of the game but it has no manual or instructions. I'm slowly starting to understand what controls what but cannot figure out how to pick up items like the shovel and the gears.
Does anyone remember how to pick them up and then use them?

I must sound like a fool but, I downloaded and read the manual and I still cannot see where it explains what I need to know so I can play the game. If anyone out there can help, I sure would appreciate it....before I pull all my hair out!....[what's left of it].
