Machine Exception Error

Nope, it can happen right after Windows starts with the "Welcome" message or it can happen when i'm playing a game (After 20 minutes or so).

Interesting update; i started Windows normally, immediately started the test, after 30 minutes PC didn't restart. I tried to start Windows Live Messenger and right at that moment the PC restarted.

After the second restart, i started the program again. It's been 30 minutes again, Mozilla Firefox and Winamp are running and no sign of restart.

Could it be the Graphics Card that's failing and because the test is keeping it busy i'm not getting any BSOD's?

Possibly. Let's hope this test can work through the 2.5 hours. It could be a driver issue for your videocard as well. Yes, the 0x9C are due to hardware issues but if the drivers are bad then the hardware is bad.

I am also suspicious of your power supply at this point.

I know i should let the test run peacefully, but i couldn't help it and opened a Youtube video. PC restarted right at that moment again. Started the test a third time -.-'

About the PSU; I tried installing my housemate's Power Supply earlier, but it had no effect. PC kept restarting. Why do you think it could be the PSU?

Here is the reason I asked: With very few exceptions, power supplies that come with a case are garbage but they are often installed in pre-built systems. Rarely do they supply what they need and their fail rate is high. There are a few that may be stable and last awhile, but such is not the norm. (And honestly I never knew Asus made psus)

Now I am not saying this is your issue but keep in mind that the psu is the backbone of any system. If it is not putting out the requirred power you need you will have problems.

Where did you purchase this PC from?

It is built with different brand components, i bought it from a local computer store. (Gold Computer / Turkey)

I've heard about the PSU's that come with the case are mostly garbage, but this is my second computer and i never had problems with my older one, so i didn't really pay much of an attention to that matter when i bought this PC.

I'm beginning to like all this testing though, feels like i'm playing Sleuth. =P

Yes, it can be fun -- at times. ;) It is a good way to gain experience and familirize oneself with diagnostic techniques and tools.

Your psu now makes more sense because you are in a different part of the world where different manufacturers can and do operate.

Have you ever used a multimeter to test a power supply?

Yeah i feel like an unsuccessful Sherlock imitation. =P

I have not used a multimeter, no. I thought i ruled out the PSU by trying my housemate's PSU -and still getting the same result- but considering he also has a PSU that came with the case, your suspicion of the PSU makes sense.

Do you suggest i use a multimeter on the PSU or are there any software to test it as well?

*sigh* 10 minutes away from finishing the test and PC restarted again. Does VMT keep a log for unfinished tests?

Also, i attached the minidump in case it helps, couldn't catch the BSOD.

Well now, we do have a different error and it actually cited a possible cause. The error code is 0x8E and these are almost always caused by hardware but sometimes by drivers.

The driver is an Nvidia display driver nv4_disp.dll. I suggest doing the following...

1. Download Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper (both have free versions) to your desktop screen and install.

2. Download the latest diver(s) for your video card but don't install them.

3. Uninstall your video card drivers and reboot your PC into Safe Mode. Run Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper. If it doesn't find any video card drivers that is quite okay.

4. Reboot and install new video card drivers.

* Get back to us with the results.

I will do that right after posting this message.

After the last restart, i started the test again, and after 1.5 hours it restarted (D'oh). I'm attaching the latest minidump.

Well well...

After i installed the new driver and restarted the computer, i got this highly informative and entertaining error;

which was followed by this less entertaining error;

ouchu.jpg

I googled sw20.exe and apparently it's an MSI Video Card file. I followed the instructions but i have no idea why i'm getting this error message.

Should i do it all over again?

Wow i think i might have done something wrong.

I started VMT after installing the new drivers, here's an interesting result;

It could very well be that your video card is bad. However, do the following:

1. Check to see if your fan is working on your video card.

2. If it is then uninstall your card; use whatever tool you used to clean out all drivers. Uninstall the card from your motherboard. Then reset the card and install your drivers from the installation disk that came with your video card.

* What are the results?

Check this link out: http://www.file.net/process/sw20.exe.html

The fan is working perfectly fine.

After following the instructions, the error message at startup disappeared.

So what next? Should i run the Video Memory Stress Test again?

Edit : Right after this message i started Windows Live Messenger and PC restarted again.

So if I read you correctly you uninstalled the card and then physically reseated and reinstalled the drivers, correct? And since doing so you are at this moment not experiencing the previous issues, correct?

If so, leave as is and get back to us if stability persists or if new crashes occur.

Not exactly. I did what you told me to, uninstalled the driver, then the card, then reseated the card and reinstalled the driver (from the installation disk that came with the card). The only issue that's solved is those "Fail" and "sw20.exe" errors disappeared but the PC keeps restarting.

Interesting thing is that when i installed the new driver i downloaded from the official website, i could start Windows Live Messenger without any problem. When i installed the old driver from the installation disk, it restarts right after i right click Live Messenger.exe

I think i might have done something wrong while installing the new driver.

I'll try installing it again and get back with results.

I reinstalled the new driver, no "Fail" or "sw20.exe" errors at startup but the PC keeps restarting and i get errors (just like the one in the SS a few messages above) on Video Memory Stress Test.

So what does that mean? Do we have a winner or do we keep testing?

Edit : Well I uninstalled the Video Card driver and started Windows on normal mode. I'll leave the Pc on before i go to sleep, so if it's still working when i wake up i think it'll be clear that the Video Card is failing.

Okay, sounds like a plan. One question: When you installed the new driver you made sure the old driver was first uninstalled, correct?

The first time i did, when i got the "Fail" and "sw20.exe" errors, apparently i did something wrong and those error messages were the consequences. Then i uninstalled the new driver (This time correctly), installed the old one and the messages disappeared. (The restart problem didn't go away though)

Then i uninstalled the old driver, installed the new driver, got no error messages (Which means i did things properly) but the Pc restarted again.

So finally i uninstalled the Video Card driver and the Pc's running fine since my last message.

Edit : Wow, right after this message PC restarted again.
