Microsoft: developers decide if Scorpio games have frame rate parity with Xbox One titles

There’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the upcoming Project Scorpio, with recent hardware reveals leading to a rise in pre-orders for the “most powerful console ever made.” Now, Microsoft has explained a bit more about the machine; specifically, it says developers won’t be forced to ensure there is frame rate parity between Scorpio and Xbox One games.

The subject arose on Twitter after a user claimed there is frames per second parity between the two consoles when it comes to multiplayer gaming, which, according to them, means a device from 2013 is holding back the Scorpio.

The statement led to Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra stepping in, assuring people that such decisions were left to the developers, not Microsoft.

The user was replying to a tweet from Ybarra that was posted 20 minutes earlier. “Developers are free to choose how they use the power of Project Scorpio for games. We have no requirements limiting framerate or fidelity,” he wrote.

Considering the Scorpio’s hardware and capabilities, it would be unusual for Microsoft to dictate how developers are allowed to use its power. But Microsoft Studios' General Manager, Shannon Loftis, believes that when it comes to multiplayer, devs are unlikely to choose different frame rates for each console - a way of ensuring the experience stays balanced and fair for both sets of users.

As with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Pro, all Xbox One games will work on the Scorpio. If they want, developers can make them look and perform better on the upcoming console.

We can expect to find out more Scorpio details at E3 next month.

Having the same frame rate for multiplayer makes sense, but Scorpio users could still get better and high-res graphics.

Still, I imagine that Scorpio users will get better frame rates even with a frame rate cap, in cases where games for the Xbox One has frame rate drops.

Welcome to the PC world. :D

Ha ha what a fail actually. Why didn't I think about that before. Sure devs will keep the same framerate on both consoles in MP, cuz otherwise you can experience desynchronization.

Could that be mitigated by capping the framerate at a multiplier of the lower rate? Having said that, the later console would experience less frame drops when the action gets intense.

Yeah by no more than 16 ms. That's hardly anything to fuss over. Hell I'm luck, if latency over my ISP get less than 200 ms.

If I bought a Scorpio just to find out It gets the same performance in MP I would be pissed, prob sell it.
BF1 is unlocked on ps4, fps are everywhere, if DICE or others held it back on purpose for the non Scorpios so no one is left behind then it will fail.
It would be better for SP games only.

I hate to even say this but if RDR2 dos not release on PC or is impossible to emulate for some reason than this may be my first console purchase since PS3 release month.

**** consoles.

I welcome you in return.

Not sure thought with all people commenting that this is the same as PC if they think it's good or bad, or just don't think about it (probably the latter).
Neither good or bad. The possible desync lattency is so negligible that isn't even worthy considering.
