Microsoft is making Windows 10 an automatic update next year

I have been using Windows 10 as an insider for a long time now. I concede that Windows 10 may be superior in a lot of technical ways. And I know this is superficial but there's something about the Windows 10 UI I just can't get used to. Aside from that, the tin foil hat comment is a little over the top. If you caught someone going through your mail in your mailbox and it wasn't the postman would you run outside and ask them what the hell they think they are doing? Or would you like us to believe your reply would be, "sure, go ahead, I have nothing to hide?"

Exploiting every customer's personal information by default might be okay if it's open and transparent. But the customer should be in control of it. Sure you can spew off 10 bullet points about why Windows 10 is better than Windows 7 but as I type this on my Windows 7 system I don't encounter many scenarios where I say, dammit I cant do that on Windows 7, let me switch systems. So from a realistic practical everyday use scenario, Windows 10 is just not that compelling.

Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 on people harder than anything I've ever seen in the past. It wreaks of desperation. If it's so popular, let people chase it, let people come searching for it. Stop bashing them over the head with it. I don't see people demanding Windows 10. I see it infecting the nation like a slow moving virus by default because it's free. That's the "only" reason I have installed it on a second computer. Because it was FREE.That's it.

I'm sorry but Windows 10 is "not" the pinnacle of Microsoft's Window line of releases. It just....isn't. It's better than Windows 7 in some ways and yet worse in others. That's why it will NOT go down in history as the greatest Windows release ever. You have to get everything right for that accolade. Windows 7 was the pinnacle at the time of it's release. End of story.

Please explain how Windows 10 makes you so much more productive?

Snooping through your emails? that's stupid. win 10 isn't looking in your emails. it just gives ads based on keywords. such technology has been used by others for over a decade. google, yahoo and every single other big email provider does the same. and no, it isn't looking at your emails if you are using the online clients (like gmail). I honestly can't believe that this is a problem for you. Why would you even care if an algorithm knows that you are cheating on your wife? ignorance is bliss I guess.

You use your smartphone, facebook, google and yet you can't find the time to actually look at what exactly win 10 is doing. The win 10 privacy is basically the same as the android and IOS one, just worded a bit differently. You read somewhere on a blog (that had mostly fake or false information) that MS is evil and you are too lazy to fact check them.

Nobody is forcing you to install windows 10, but that doesn't mean that MS doesn't have the right to promote their product. I'm sure even you don't want win 7 to become the next XP. Especially when there is no real reason to refuse a win 10 upgrade sans maybe driver issues on older hardware. Look at the comments... so many are already convinced that MS is forcefully installing the new OS as an update, which, as stated in the article, is false.

Since you don't know why win 10 is better for productivity then you've never used the multiple desktops, the new task manager, the new command prompt (which saved me, as a programmer a lot of time when making new builds), the new file copy windows, wi-fi connects almost instantly (+ built in 3G drivers) and many more improvements that windows 7 doesn't have. Even the UI helps save you time by being much snappier and it doesn't lag for minutes when you have a lot of things opened. (especially on a laptop)

Put your tinfoil hat back on because aliens are coming to abduct you. MS sold you to them.
You too @cliffordcooley, stop writing illogical comments. We get it, you hate MS. No need to write epic fantasy stories.

All you have to do is hide the update, turn off automatic updates, and your all set, you can still not download it and upgrade if you don't want to. *face palm*
You can't turn off automatic updates, not even in professional edition. The updates will still download and schedule a reboot. Your manual adjustment to automatic updates is manually setting a reboot schedule and even then you are limited as to the options that are available. There is no turning automatic updates off.
But there is: Control pannel - windows update - turn off updates, work in windows 7 and 8. As for windows 10 you can delete the task in task scheduler, use gpedit-administrative templates-windows components-windows update:1.automatically restart at scheduled time-disabled. 2.configure automatic updates-disabled.3.auto updates detect frequency-disabled.4reprompt for restart for scheduled install-disabled.
I haven't received windows updates for 2 months now.

And on a completely unrelated note, Google has all but confirmed their going to combine ChromeOS and Android, and that it will be available for testing on PCs next year.

If I had Microsoft stock I'd be dumping it.

Why? Because a company who's made their living collecting all their user's data, offers an online-only OS that... collects all their user's data?

We get it, you're in love with windows 10, and have the rosiest pair of tinted glasses they could afford for you. The rest of us don't.

Microsoft has a right to promote their product, but promote =/= shove down our throats. Automatically downloading that stupid windows 10 nagging tool is borderline adware territory. Same with the fact that update rechecks itself constantly. And that system upgrade isn't guaranteed to even work properly. Of course, the people who click on that popup are the ones who can't fix the system when the upgrade goes belly-up.

And privacy concerns are a fantastic reason not to upgrade to windows 10. Why does microsoft need to collect all of this data. What are they using it for. THEY claim its just basic telemetry data, with no personal data included, but if you believe that is truthful without any third parties confirming it, I have a bridge to sell you. Who is to say that the alphabet agencies don't have access to said data? Who is to say that microsoft wont accidentally leak this data at ANY point? They worked with the NSA before, whose to say they arn't right now?

As for the improvements? wifi connects instantly in windows 7, as soon as the thing is turned on. And my UI doesn't lag when lots of stuff is running. But then, my laptop has a SSD and isn't an 8 year old piece of junk. It's relatively modern, and has no problems running a modern OS.

What OS are you running?
I do believe the topic is Windows 10. And yes I know you can turn off Windows update in Windows Vista and Windows 7 (that is the case with XP even), that is no longer the case in Windows 10.

But the article is about MS forcing Win10 on those of us who don't want it. Our only option now is to disable automatic updates which we can still do on WinXP and Win7. The WiFi Sense feature of uploading your passcode to MS is enough to keep Win10 off my network and out of my house. Besides, I look good in Tin. :)

Microsoft has the business market, Apple has the graphic design and media market. What point would ChromeOS mixed with Android have as an OS? None. There is already multiple Linux distros for that.

Let's see, how many commercially successful pure Linux distros are there...?

Oh, right. Zero.

And how many Linux-*based* OS's are widely used on desktops worldwide?

Two. Their called OSX and Android. Since Microsoft is abdicating the PC through their incompetence and desperation and Apple has no interest in bringing OSX to non-Apple hardware, I guess that pretty well narrows down who's likely to disrupt Microsoft's dominance. I hope I didn't hurt your head with my logic.

Haters going to be haters I guess... You can please most of the people most of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

if you don't know why MS collects the data then you should not even comment here. seriously now, do you live in the '90s? never heard of cloud services? there is nothing unusual for an app like maps to ask for your location or for cortana to use what you write to give you better results. this has been a standard feature in all browsers and smartphones.
instead of commenting about things you don't understand I suggest you put some effort in learning how the OS market evolved in the past decade and how cloud services work.

this is not about loving or hating the OS. you can dislike it, there are plenty of reasonable motives to not like win 10, but what I hate is people spewing BS and even intentionally lying about things.

we are moving towards a cloud only world people. learn to deal with it or you'll end up like one of those grampas people are making fun of in youtube videos.

as for the NSA part... tinfoil hat much? if they want your data they will get your data. MS doesn't even need to gather anything. you yourself will send it to them.

He was talking about turning off automatic updates in Win 7 and 8.1, (so as to avoid this latest MS aggression) and in those OS's, you most certainly can.

For anyone who wants to avoid the several Microsoft updates that pertain to telemetry, Windows 10, and other unpalatable changes, check out the reddit threads on avoiding Windows 10 upgrades.

Here is a page on suspect updates.

I've made the following thread here that I'm updating monthly.
As for Win10 being pushed by becoming a "recommended" update that is not correct.
By default in Windows Update on Windows 7 "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" is not checked.

No, the topic is not Windows 10. The topic is Windows 10 being an automatic update on Win7 and 8 machines. This is why people are saying to watch your updates and turn things off. Because you're still on a 7/8 machine.

Optional my ***! the reason its on 110 million devices is because its such a loud 1/4 screen non stop nag that people click on it just to get rid of it and the next thing you know they have windows 10.

I totally agree that windows 8 should auto upgrade to 10 but leave windows 7 users alone!

Ditto. Upgrading on older Win7 is a night mare since AMD doesn't support drivers and Windows accepts andd automatically installs faulty ones. In comparison to Win7, Win10 is also following your every move, it's easy to overlook privacy settings and you don't know what's going on under the hood.

I tried to download 7 on another a virtual machine to try windows 10 and the only installer microsoft offers is in Korean. I have my key, their official site only offers korean, it seems to only affect people who preordered windows 7. I supported you by preordering and this is would I get?

The only advantage to 10 seems to be the new direct x. Windows 10 ui is designed for a tablet\cell phone. The ui takes extra clicks to get anywhere. It is now being shoved down our throats like bing. Poor old people.

I get at least one pop up a day about windows 10, I have updated, unchecked 10 and had it try to install 3 times in the last few months.

Well, Gmail splits content into 3 away l categories. They're "Primary", "Social", & "Promotions. I'm guessing it has to search a lot of "keywords" to do this. What Google chooses to do with this information is anybody's guess. It is bit of a paranoid fantasy to believe there's a draconian purpose to it. OTOH, to suggest that Google be automatically awarded "the honor system", leaves something to be desired as well. Mulling those polar opposite extremes over in my mind all the time, would give me a massive headache. So, since my email contains nothing of interest, (even to me), other than possibly tracking information on the stuff I buy online, I compartmentalize the "evil empire nonsense", and go on my merry, carefree way.

Besides, the stuff Amazon, "recommends especially for me", in the way of CDs and DVDs, in most cases, I've already owned for a decade. And this is crap coming from a company whose CEO claims they can, "tell when and what you're going to buy, before you buy it". IMHO, that algorithm needs a whole lot of tweaking. I'm thinking he couldn't even guess how many fingers I'm holding up ATM.

we are moving towards a cloud only world people. learn to deal with it or you'll end up like one of those grampas people are making fun of in youtube videos.
Well, speak for yourself. I am not moving toward any "cloud world". In fact, I am trying to desperately stay away from it.. As for YouTube videos making fun of people like me, I'm not stupid enough to waste precious time watching them, much less waste even more time crafting a rebuttal.

I will say that today's crop of sheep-esque, "tech-beciles", fail to realize they're being literally HERDED into the cloud, all the while bleating about losing their privacy. Every new computer / internet "convenience", (and that's the lure), chips away at human autonomy. I connect boxes to the web in an ad hoc manner. For everything else, there's multi-terabyte hard drives and stand alone computers. (which BTW, don't get updated once an OS is installed and working correctly).

Once upon it was understood that age begets wisdom. Try and have a bit more respect for your elders.

I'm running Win 7 in this computer, and haven't had a single mention about Windows 10...:D

It's probably because I have Windows Update set to, "check for updates, but let me choose whether to download or install them". "Recommended updates" are unchecked altogether!

(Dear lord, I hope I didn't just jinx myself by saying that). :D
