Microsoft issues invites for 'Windows 9' event on September 30th

Says who? And for what reason? Using Windows 7 in a home environment, I feel like there is no reason to ever upgrade the operating system. I know everybody likes to beat the "improved security" drum over and over and over...as one of the "Oh My God!!! I must upgrade to Windows 8 NOW to be safe!!!" theories. I think Microsoft had a meeting where they gave that bullet point to their employees after they realized what a catastrophe Windows 8 was right after launch.

"Okay peeps, here's the deal. The sales numbers for Windows 8 are abysmal to put it mildly. People aren't being compelled to upgrade to Windows 8 out of want. So, were moving to plan B. We will compel them to upgrade out of fear. Hit all the forums you can...hard and fast. Yes, the same way we hit our loyal customer market with Windows 8. Hard and fast people. Move, Move Move!!!".

Phhhfffttttt. Backup data that you cannot afford to lose, and you should be okay, as a home consumer anyway.

Honestly, if I WAS going to upgrade to Windows 8/9 I would install one of the 3rd party Start Menu replacements after seeing the Frankenstein monster that they have brought back to life in Windows 9. At least they "appear" to have soft corners from what I can see in the screenshots. All those damn square corners are way too hard on the eyes. Should have left it in it's grave for Gods sake.
Yeah but trust me, you will eventually have to upgrade to maintain app compatibility and such. It may be 10 years from now but that day will come.

Well, in 10 years I just might be okay with it. :) But for the moment, I am good where I'm at. So, we'll see.

I think you have a few of your thoughts backwards. The reason some people are still running Windows XP(from what I read, anyway) are that the key applications they are using are no longer being updated or maintained for newer versions of Windows. Therefore, they "can't" upgrade without losing the applications their company so heavily depends on.
None the less.... see post below.

Nnnoooo! Come back to us, don't go into the light.

It's hard to argue with someone who makes a claim 10 years into the future. :) Who knows by then. :) But right now, I think all Windows 9 is, is something Microsoft took out just so they could put it back. The two biggest bullet points for Windows 9 are the return of a start menu(a gay start menu at that) and virtual desktops? I can say this for Microsoft. They got some balls. I agree with the rumors going around that the next version of Windows won't be called 9, just "Windows". They probably are smart enough to realize they risk being lynched if they actually tried to sell this next version as anything that sets itself apart from its predecessor. Ironically, that was their whole intention with this release too. To set it apart from the failure of Windows 8. I guess they just can't win at this point.

While they are decent features, they aren't the whole reason Windows 8 was a failure. How hard is it to figure this out?

Win 7 is obsolete. Mainstream support ends in January 2015, and all the focus will be on Win 8/9+. 7 is old and tired, move on already. It doesn't support USB 3 natively either which is a pain in the arse and its slower than 8.1. Forget about DX 12 and onwards too. Old farts moaning they won't change and there is no difference - this is why XP STILL exists.
Of course M$ is going to withdraw support for Windows 7. Otherwise it would turn into another XP, and hang around for a dozen years. So it's FORCED obsolescence for Windows 7. And BTW, XP still works fine.

Since you're so trendy, I hope you get Windows whatever in the way you're asking for it, by suppository.

You cannot purchase Win7 anymore right now, So I'm sort of excited for 9 since 8 was a public beta at best.

The split control panel and half tiles+touch half traditional desktop is really kinda Frankenstein and gross, we can't really do any worse than 8 (since vista isn't for sale anymore).

This technically should be Win 8.2 SP1 if you ask me because it looks like just visual changes. Guess we'll have to see what they reveal about it at the event - or download a hacked torrent in a few days? XD
