Microsoft stops sales of Windows 7 and 8.1 OEM licenses

Guys, when are we going to stop with this crap? I thought we were in a tech blog.

So far we know people reject change, whatever it is but now, computer changes? oh my! It's like the whole USB C type cables and audio, if the change is not forced it will never happen because PEOPLE (As in general, not speaking about anyone in particular so don't come feeling unique or different, please) have an aversion to change. Why use an adaptor or why start phasing out a 40+ years connector if it works just fine... again this is just an example, don't drop your panties ladies.

Can we agree on that in order for things to move forward, they have to forcefully phase out old concepts? There is no such thing as "if you build it they will come", no they won't.

This is only true if there is no obvious, immediate advantage to making the change. Nobody moaned about ditching floppies for CD-Rs, dialup for DSL, ethernet for WIFI, or serial/parallel for USB because the advantages were stark and obvious. People are complaining about ditching the 3.5mm jack, and ubiquitous USB standard because USB-C offers no advantage for almost everything people use USB for. Mice, flash drives, keyboards, printers, scanners.

And you think that by creating more peripherals using USB C they will sell? There is a first huge step required in order to switch technologies and standards.

Now, I bet there are lots of people saying "oh my how I miss XP, that was trully the best OS ever" and can't even remember what it was like to wait for it to boot and turn off, or how they had to search for drivers each time they plugged in a new usb device. Hybrid shut-off start implemented in W8, although true, in a moment where people and manufacturers started switching to SSDs, was still heavily noticed on HDDs (Hell I know), the new search capabilities, although not a lot of people use it, it HAS been awesomely improved and so on and so forth. The thing is people don't notice the same way as you wouldn't know what it is to sleep on egyptian threaded sheets until you have to go back to the plastic crap (Whatever that is not egyptian cotton).

Display scaling, multiple monitor support, Windows native apps - all substantial improvements to Windows 10 over 7. Along with improved startup/shutdown times like you've mentioned there's very little bad in 10 when compared to 7.

It's a shame the only way they can get people to use Windows 10 is by force. Then they brag about adoption rates.
It's more of a shame people cling to an outdated OS when the replacement is superior in most and equal in all other ways. It would be more understandable had the update not been free.

But I'm assuming you were referring to win7 not 8 because there was so little support for 8, right?

" Cling" We know who camp you in

Which are all irrelevant when compared to reasons why people might prefer to cling to an older OS.

You seriously want me to rehash all the complaints people have had with all the new operating systems when they came out. I suggest you go back and reread them for yourself. Just don't troll the thread further by suggesting they don't exist.
I'd like for you to state your argument instead of dancing around it, calling me a "troll" when you refuse to substantiate your position.

Yes. Display scaling? Never had a problem this would solve. Multiple monitor support? Never needed it. Native app support? If he's talking about those UWP abominations, that's one of the reasons to avoid 10. My PC is not a phone or a tablet; the existing Win32 programs I've been using for decades do the job without all of the UI butchery required to make a small-screened touch device work.

Faster boot-up and shut-down? Can't say I really noticed much of a difference when I tested 10. Given that I only boot up a couple of times a month, I really don't consider that a major issue, and with my SSD, Windows 7 boots plenty fast anyway.

I wouldn't take 10 for free, so I certainly won't be paying for it in (ever). I've already started the migration to Linux Mint... I've got three years to complete it, but I could switch today if I had to. Three years is a long time in computer terms, so I can't say what I will do at that point. If "the latest version of Windows" has actually become a usable product by then, I might keep the dual-boot setup. MS would almost certainly have to abandon their "Windows 10 is the last version ever" mantra, as the name "Windows 10" has become more toxic than "Windows 8" and every bit as bad as "Windows Vista" was back in the day.

If not, well... Linux on the desktop has gotten pretty good in its Mint flavor, and it's going in the right direction, unlike Windows.

Linux Blows. Win 10 ain't bad with Classic start menu. 8.1 is fine with classic start menu. I use 7 the most. I cling to it cause I like it and it does not call home like 10. I won't mind going to 10 when I have too. The problem with forced upgrades is forced upgrades of other software. I use what I am comfortable with and know how to use. As for keeping up with the times...I have no tattoo's, I have never said AWESOME and I rebel against...embrace, what you need to know, we are excited to..., liberalism And anyone that quotes the Prez...."Cling" Thank You too much

For myself, I prefer Windows 7 an older, at this point in time. When family and friends ask, I tell them to buy a computer with 10 already installed. That way I can rest now. No more helping them update their computer. While I don't need Microsoft to be my nanny with my computer, over the years I see that some people do. :)

Win 10 was never free. You had to surrender a valid licence/product key to get it.
Never mind the stuff they are getting with your info

I sticked with XP for a long time. Vista sucked. 7 was fine but why should I upgrade if XP still works and 7 is more resource-hungry. Then I dual-booted because some software worked only on XP and some only on 7. Then after some time all software I needed worked on win7 and I said goodbye to XP.

Win8 came out. oh god it sucked. Then Win8.1(why the hell does it even exist?).

Win10 comes out. This one might be good. At least it looks like it. I decided to try it and what do you think? It sucks. WTF happened to Control Panel? Why is it castrated? Why GIMP crashes? Why GIMP freezes? Why can't I install 3ds max? Why it freezes when starting up? Why piece of screen freezes when using right-click menu? Why it stays on top of every window? Why I need to change resolution to make it go. Where is my free ram? Why? Why? Why... I really tried to make friends with Win10, I really did. But it just didn't want to.

And now tell me why W10 is more superior to W7.

Seriously, the adoption rates for Windows 10 have been the most minimalist than any other version of the Windows before. And I guess it was due to lack of the word of mouth. The word of mouth for the latest version wasn't that widespread to cause a virality push. So Microsoft adopted every possible means to get it existing users get to adopt Windows 10 no matter what.

it's like this hasn't happened with every single other windows release in the past. why are people so quick to make comments like this?
besides the few update quirks that annoy people, windows 10 is pretty much superior to windows 7 in every single way. (productivity, performance, stability, features, etc)

they already extended OEM sales for win 7 because of win 8. there is no need to do it again.
That's because until they have a few years to work out the kinks all of Microsoft's OSes have been absolute trash all the way back to DOS 5

Microsoft never pushed any OS as hard as this one. When did Microsoft upgrade your system without your permission before Windows 10?

There were, quote unquote, reports of win 10 installing, but this was most coming from people who could not provide proof of them not doing something stupid.

Let's set something straight here: I couldn't care less about what happened with the upgrades. MS did something really stupid and they got tons of bad press. Shame on them.
What you and everybody else should care right now is if it's worth upgrading from win 7 to win 10 and, unless you have some weird fetish for Aero and/or you think the NSA cares about your illegally downloaded porn, then yes, you should upgrade.

I don't know what you did, but you clearly did something wrong or you are complaining about the first few beta builds. everything you mentioned works just fine even on older hardware. I've installed win 10 on literally all types of hardware, old and new, and none of them had problems. (for engineer, students, managers, etc)
and control panel is there in all of it's glory alongside the new one (at least until they port everything to the new one). how did you miss it?

No you shouldn't load win 10 give it a couple of years until it's ready for prime time. I've been using on different hardware since the very first not to public beta and it's still really beta software, the last major update borked all kinds of hardware.

Speaking from personal experience, this forced upgrade was a thing. Microsoft pushed the Windows 10 upgrade into the "recommended" update cycle, and people who had accepted standard default update settings ended up waking up one day to a Windows 10 welcome screen. Happened to the media center PC I built, which the wife uses as her primary - she always hit the little "X" to tell the constant harassing reminder about upgrading to Windows 10 to go away, never once clicked to accept, yet it magically updated one evening. Wiped most of her settings, she lost her email (how the hell they managed to screw up a basic function like native email in upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 still baffles me), and was generally confused as could be until we got things figured out. On the work front, we have a remote facility that had 2 Windows 7 computers end up in the shop because they couldn't boot up, turned out it was a failed unrequested Windows 10 upgrade attempt that managed to completely botch them up. That was fun to figure out.

It was a widely reported issue earlier this year, covered on many tech sites, and lawsuits were imposed against Microsoft over the whole debacle. Windows 10 was worth upgrading to for free for many people, they didn't have to try to ninja force-feed the thing into people while they were sleeping. But, Microsoft isn't exactly famous for having continuously good judgement.
