I'm going to ride the Windows 10 train as long as possible. I hate (can't emphasis enough) Windows 11 so, so, sooooooooo much!
Nowhere in the EULA is forced updating of software. For what? You don't own your copy of Windows, you license it, they can pretty much do whatever they want with it since you agreed to those terms by using the software.
If its that way, they could put we own all your property condition into next eula, and automatically M$ would own half world. They almost get broken 90s cos pushing IE monopoly, and today they are screwing with whole world. You cant uninstall edge, you cant uninstall defender, you cant uninstall store, you cant disable updates, you cant stop telemetry. Reason for lawsuits are piling upFor what? Don’t be so sure. The main issues with Linux are ease of use and games. The former is getting better every year and the latter is just about solved on the steam deck. As those pain points drop M$ seems intent on increasing the pain of using Windows.Bro no one is switching to Linux![]()
With Windows 10 pro; I can completely disable those updates. So once again I schedule my update on W10 to the max time allowed for a few weeks. I put my PC asleep last night around 7PM.It's now 10:30AM and it was running the whole time! It was sitting at the bios since I have a password when you start your PC up.
I didn't need any holy water this time since the update didn't ruin my drivers. I guess you can call it a win.

Problem is that windows will always be much simpler to use than linux; and that is why linux will never gain traction; because it is incapable of appealing to the mass market who just want something simple to use that is fairly close to a phone with a keyboard in terms of complexity.Don’t be so sure. How many retail stores have linux on their devices they are selling? You think people who just want to go buy a computer and have no real technical skills are going to care what's on it? I can promise you, Linux will not become mainstream if it isn't an OEM package at stores.Don’t be so sure. The main issues with Linux are ease of use and games. The rig I built I used W10 HOME OEM unfortunately. With Windows 10 pro; I can completely disable those updates.
You obviously haven’t used linux lately (or ever), its interface is just as easy as Windows these days.Problem is that windows will always be much simpler to use than linux; and that is why linux will never gain traction; because it is incapable of appealing to the mass market who just want something simple to use that is fairly close to a phone with a keyboard in terms of complexity.
I don’t really care about the Luddites. I am talking about the reasonably tech savvy people moving on from Windows if M$ isn’t careful. How many retail stores have linux on their devices they are selling? You think everyday users (majority of sales for M$) are Luddites? How much of a bubble are you in. Most businesses won't even go to linux. I work in the IT industry, I can promise you, most people won't even bother looking at it, not even people in IT.I don’t really care about the Luddites. It is most definitely nowhere near as simple or intuitive as Windows; that is why it is used by an almost inexistent minority. If it was as streamlined as you pretend it would be as popular as other free things like Fortnite. You obviously haven’t used linux lately (or ever), its interface is just as easy as Windows these days.
yeah; same issue for my dell laptop; but you can get pro keys from ebay for $50 or less iircThe rig I built I used W10 HOME OEM unfortunately.
First, you tried to argue against my point that *some* people might choose linux *or* stay on Win 10 forever if Win 12 is also bad, by saying people that "have no real technical skills" won’t choose linux (thanks captain obvious). You think everyday users (majority of sales for M$) are Luddites? Just because YOU like it and can use it, does not mean anyone else will.
First off, there are dozens of flavors of linux with varying interfaces. And yes some are just as windows and mouse driven as windows. And not more difficult to transition to than Mac.It is most definitely nowhere near as simple or intuitive as Windows; that is why it is used by an almost inexistent minority. I recently bought 2 pro keys for $12. Don't pay $50.yeah; same issue for my dell laptop; but you can get pro keys from ebay for $50 or less iirc
Sadly we don't get to decide, since non of us run an OS for the sake of the OS. It is about the software, so we are where the software is.I don’t really care about the Luddites. I am talking about the reasonably tech savvy people moving on from Windows if M$ isn’t careful.
I always get DVD versions brand new; had too many issues with just keys myself.First off, there are dozens of flavors of linux with varying interfaces. And yes some are just as windows and mouse driven as windows. And not more difficult to transition to than Mac.
The reason so many people use windows is *marketshare*. Random new kid wants to learn how to use computers - guess what computer OS is likely in front of him and what computer OS his parent/teacher/etc likely learned? Most people are lazy (efficient?) and don't want to learn new things so whatever they learn first will likely be all they ever use even if the world has moved on (realtors clinging to fax machines years after the world moved on comes to mind). Why do you think Google is giving away chromebooks to schools? And why M$ is so worried about it?
And wow, your Fortnite comparison is terrible. There are so many free things that no one uses for a variety of reasons. Even free games that no one uses. But, yeah, one of the world's most popular games that happens to start out free while getting paid in other ways is totally a perfect example of how all free things work.

Actually, IBM has left Windows long ago, back in the day, we used OS/2, then once OS/2 was no more, they turned to Windows, and now IBM staff are using Macbook Pros. Win-win, 3 year old Macbooks hold value better then any other windows laptop, plus got rid of M$...You think everyday users (majority of sales for M$) are Luddites? How much of a bubble are you in. So true about the software, although for home, I feel that games is crux of the issue for many, which the work steamOS is doing may solve that.Sadly we don't get to decide, since non of us run an OS for the sake of the OS. It is about the software, so we are where the software is.
And this goes even more so for what we do at work, there so much is decided on a company level.
I love that old saying! It is just like the old saying that no one was ever fired for choosing IBM, these days it is just Microsoft and not IBM that is the standard.
But then you have to lug around a DVD drive. And at $6/key... that's like the cost of half a sandwich here so I don't lose any sleep about needing to buy another in the potential future with a bad key.I always get DVD versions brand new; had too many issues with just keys myself.
you only need the drive for the install; I have a USB DVD drive that I use if I'm not installing a dvd driveBut then you have to lug around a DVD drive.
