Minimalist smartphone with physical keyboard promises four days of battery life

Why it matters: Smartphones are either the greatest things since sliced bread, or the worst. Minimal, a company pitching a distraction-free phone, seems to think they've ruined society and want to help users take back their lives.

The Minimal Phone is said to be designed for those seeking efficiency and simplicity. It features a full QWERTY physical keyboard and an E-Ink display that reportedly reduces eye strain and promotes healthy sleep. Think of a modern, low-end BlackBerry and you'll be on the right track.

The device packs a 4,000 mAh battery that can last for up to four days on a single charge. With fast charging, you can top off the device from empty in just one hour or get an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes. It runs a custom operating system, but it's unclear if it is based on Android or another platform.

Aside from a couple of device renders, a Black Mirror-style trailer, and a landing page with the option to join a waiting list, there's nothing else to go on. Perhaps even more concerning than the lack of details is the seemingly uncertain nature of the brand itself.

Between the trailer and the landing page, I counted no fewer than five different spelling variants of the brand name including Minimal, Mnml, Miniimal, Minml, and Miniml. Perhaps it boils down to a language barrier or low effort marketing, but something is telling me to proceed with caution.

Minimalist / companion phones aren't a new idea. Devices like The Light Phone, the Palm Phone, and the Nokia 150 have all attempted to water down the modern smartphone experience by stripping out features and even Internet connectivity.

The truth of the matter is that you don't need to go out and buy a featureless device to reduce mobile screen time. Modern smartphones have all the controls you need to lessen or even fully disable alerts and notifications from apps and services. If at any time you are feeling overwhelmed, just enable Do Not Disturb or simply put down your phone and go do something else.

Darn, surface level details had me excited for a second there (keyboard and good battery life). But I'd want to at least be able to run Android apps, and properly watch a Youtube video (the few times I need to).

Not going to lie, that web page just looks like one big Phishing scam. There's far too many "Join the waitlist" buttons, and there's even a "Receive updates" link at the very bottom that takes you to the same URL as the buttons. Add all the spelling errors for their own device and custom OS and you've got a page that looks like it needs to be wiped from the web.

Wait a minute, each misspelling is different. Are these intentional so that this page appears in more keyword searches?

@Shawn Knight, good on you for not including a link to the site. While I think this would be an interesting device, everything about it seems fake.

I think it's great to have these options for teenagers who are already over-saturated with screens. True story: I have seen middle school kids with better phones than their parents.

But it's all about the price. It needs to be less than $100 for it to have any chance. The kindle paperwhite is $130 and it already does everything this promises and then some.

The Truth of the matter is that you pay at least $500 more for a full feature smart phone...!

Sounds good, but it needs to be cheap enough as this was already tried and didn't really take off. I think the real truth is though most people want to be consumed by these things... I think its only really a niche amount of people that truly are fed up with it and interested in minimalism, and most of them are older generation. We need to not let our children be consumed by these things, and I see a few parents limiting their children which is good to see - but a majority are not.

Loose the E-Ink screen, add Android and this will have my vote!
Then its just another typical phone... what is the point?

The point of this device is mostly taking away the battery and proverbial life sucking full color display out of the equation and sprinkle a simple OS interface on top to accomplish some basic tasks. People need to get away from spending hours and hours watching videos and posting crap on social media, this type of device would force that. Though admittedly I think the physical keyboard kind of encourages the opposite, so I don't entirely understand that even though I still miss physical keyboards and still to this day, hate touch typing/swiping.

The form-factor and physical keyboard! How did you miss that?

I don't use my CURRENT phones for any of that. I want the form factor+physical keyboard with the functionality of Android in a reasonable level of performance with a reasonable price. I am SICK TO F*#%ING DEATH of touchscreen keyboard typing and $500+ phones.

I mean I get the keyboard... that would be nice to have, but the display size is non standard and probably wouldn't play nicely with any android apps. Why don't you just get a mini bluetooth keyboard for your current phone? I think I've even seen case / keyboard in one.

Unihertz Titan. Works perfectly with all Android Apps.

Because I want it built into the phone, not a flimsy addon.
