Missing network controller device

I have a Sony Vaio VGN fs 940, windows XP. I know its old, but it has a simple job to do. I use it in my shipping dept. to make my ebay labels. After getting a blue screen I reformatted with discs. I have not been able to wirelessly connect to the internet and find that in the device manager I get a yellow exp. mark no network controller device. I have installed every download available on the sony vaio site for this specific model. Even when I wire direct to a router, many connections are dropped, and I can't get very far. I would really hate to throw this away if there is a fix out there. I really appreciate your time and effort to help me! Thanks!
