Inactive My XP computer will not get on the net, Win7 computer will

The problem i am experiencing is that on my home network i have been using for several years now one computer on my network suddenly cannot get online..however it can connect. I have called my access point manufacturer which is Cisco and paid for help but the were not able to help me. They determined that all is working well and all settings are as they should be. I then contacted my ISP, Cox communications and was essentially told the same thing. This is after going through several tests with each, such as ping tests, turning the gateway off/on, reviewing settings such as TCP/IP, DNS, etc, etc. The findings were that i have IP addresses and everything else that should be there. Ive turned off the firewall, disabled antivirus, reset tcp/ip stack and winsock. I have been working on this for two days and after paying for it still do not have it fixed. The computer acts as it normally does, no other problems except that when i press the IE icon to open a browser window it tries to go to my homepage, google, but then reverts to the "page cannot be displayed screen". This computer is running XP SP2 and is a wired connection(although it was wireless when i first experienced the problem because i have a network adapter installed as well..but i disabled it and enabled my LAC and used the ethernet cable because this is one of the exercises cisco ahd me perform to see if i could connect wired/wirelessly.. better bandwidth anyway at 100mbps compared to the 56mbps with the wireless-g adapter). The othe computer is a laptop running windows 7. It is connected wirelessly although it works if i use the wire too. Now two days ago both computers worked and had been for years. Then all of a sudden i cant get online with the desktop. This is a major problem for us and even though i usually fix my XP computer myself through viruses and windows installation repairs over the years this one has me stumped..i cannot figure out what is happening here. Looking for help on this and hopefully learn something new. Thank you in advance for any and all help in this matter. Andy

Welcome to Techspot! You're off to the wrong start here so let's get you turned around:

I would like you to check one thing-which is based on my own experience where all the connections are good but the internet isn't there:

First, set a new Restore Point:
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. click on 'create restore point> Next> Name this restore point wzcs test> Next> Close when through.

Then Click on Start> Run> type in services.msc> scroll to the end and look for WZCS> if it is on the system do a double click to open> If the Service is Started, click to Stop the Service>>> See if this restores the connection.
=============================================
If the above isn't appropriate for you machine, you have a restore point to get back in if needed.

Please follow the steps in the Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal thread HERE.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.

Please do not use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you, unless I direct you to. Do not use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.

You appears to have missed our thread above this forum for the preliminary steps and also the one saying 'don't run Combofix unless your helper instructs you to.'

As for the HJT log, we do use that at the end of cleaning o make sure no bad entries remain, but we do no use it to 'screen' for malware.

I will recommend that you uninstall HitmanPro. This is just a bundle of programs that are free on the internet, some used without the Author's permission. Hitman will only remove entries during the trial period- after which you have to pay for the program. The original programs in the bundle run as a full service- free.

About this:
The findings were that i have IP addresses and everything else that should be there. Ive turned off the firewall, disabled antivirus, reset tcp/ip stack and winsock. I have been working on this for two days and after paying for it still do not have it fixed
Please do not make any more changes while I am helping you unless I instruct you to.

I did check the logs you left but the problem is not obvious in them. Hopefully the additional scans will help me. If you cannot connect to the internet, download the programs on a flash drive and then run them on the problem computer.

ok thankyou bobbye

I have done all of the requested actions:

1. Have an AV program, System Mechanic Professional 10, did full scan and it found nothing save for that my internet connection is broken, but it could not fix. I have since uninstalled the program and cannot reinstall it yet as it needs access to the internet to reinstall. Same with Avira..it would not install saying it needed internet access.

2. Downloaded and ran TFC.

3. Ran MBAM, didnt find anything, heres log:

Thank you, Andy

Thanks for your expertise on this issue

Thanks alot for helping me with this issue...i did exactly what you asked me to do and no replys. I realize your team is up to their ears in help requests but there are others on this site that asked afetr me and they have had answers or had thier problem resolved.

Andy, there was a sudden tragic death in my family. I was off the computer for a bit and am now trying to catch up. As for reading the order of replies, this is not a test of who is being helped before you. I may have started the cleaning a while back and am continuing.

I will try to catch you up if you have patience. You started this thread 3 days ago, running the wrong programs. 2 days ago I instructed you in what to run. I first took the time to assist with the connection roblem- that's not even in the cleaning.
========================================
Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
=========================================
Download Combofix to your desktop from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Query- Recovery Console image
    RcAuto1.gif

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please paste that log in your next reply.
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
=====================================
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.

  10. Click anywhere in the post where you want the logs to go, the do Ctrl V. The log will be sent from the clipboard and pasted in the post.
  11. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
NOTE: If you forget to copy to the cli[board, you can find the log here:
C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

I cannot reinstall System Mechanic because it needs internet access to complete.

I couldnt run Eset online antivirus because of the problem we are working on..no internet connection.

I appreciate your help on this matter..Andy.

Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE .
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I only see one antivirus related entry and it is a developers tool:
Antivirus Software Development Kit (AVSDK) from Authentium Inc
Description:
The Authentium Global RISC Antivirus Software Development Kit (AVSDK) enables software developers to easily integrate best-of-breed virus detection and disinfection into their products.
It was only installed on 3/3/2011.

Normally, the security programs are listed in the Combofix header in their current setting such as Enabled or Disabled.

Please disable this program while we are cleaning: c:\program files\FixCleaner

Good news i downloaded sp3 installed it and now ie and firefox work..I think another program tampered with or changed ie files or windows update applied something...idk.
