The big picture: Apple unveiled a range of smart home hardware built around Siri AI and Apple Intelligence at its 'Welcome Home' event in New York City today. The products signal the company's newfound focus on the smart home segment, after years spent largely on the sidelines of a market dominated by Google, Amazon, Samsung. and many other specialized vendors.

The Apple Home Collection is a lineup of smart-home devices built in collaboration with LG and Schneider Electric, including several cameras with full iCloud+ integration, as well as thermostats, a doorbell, and a door lock. Apple also introduced the second-generation HomePod mini, a new Apple TV 4K, and the HomeView smart-home display and hub.

The camera lineup includes both indoor and outdoor models from LG, starting with the Floodlight Cam, which pairs dual floodlights with motion detection for perimeter monitoring. The lights switch on automatically when motion is detected, and a color night vision mode helps capture clear footage in low light.

The other two cameras are the Outdoor Cam and the Indoor Cam. The former offers the same low-light color night vision, minus the floodlights. The latter can automatically tilt up and down to adjust its view when users check in on their home. It can also be tilted manually or through the Home app on iPhone.

Apple also announced two new smart thermostats, one from LG and another from Schneider Electric. Both can be controlled through the Home app on iPhone, and both can adjust temperatures automatically using on-device intelligence, depending on whether anyone is home. Both work with a wide range of HVAC systems.

Next up is the Video Doorbell Wired, which uses dual cameras to capture separate views of visitors and packages. The front camera records in 2.5K, while the bottom camera supports full HD. It also has a built-in spotlight and a chime that plays through HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini.

As for the Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG uses Ultra Wideband technology to sense when someone carrying a Home Key on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch is approaching, and unlocks the door automatically, with no tapping or passcode needed.

In the US, the LG Video Doorbell Wired and Smart Deadbolt Lock start at $230 and $350, respectively, while the Floodlight Cam starts at $400. The Outdoor Cam Plug-In starts at $300 and the Indoor Cam Plug-In at $200. Both thermostats start at $200, and the LG Temperature Sensor and Schneider Home Room Sensor each start at $40.

The Apple Home Collection arrives in December, with select accessories following in early 2027. The doorbell and cameras will be sold in the US, Canada, and the UK, while the lock and thermostats are limited to the US and Canada at launch.

Finally, Apple announced the HomePod mini 2, with support for Siri AI arriving in a future software update. Powered by the S10 chip, the second-gen speaker improves on its predecessor with better audio quality and four-speaker surround sound when paired with the new Apple TV 4K and either four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd-gen) speakers. It costs $149, up from $99 for the original, and is available to pre-order today, with in-store availability beginning Friday, October 30.

The Apple tax is heavy. Even the most common item costs hundreds of dollars when you can buy alternatives at a fraction of Apple's price. I have never personally bought a single item made by Apple and I never will. It's bad enough that everything is ridiculously overpriced, but Apple's main goal is to get everyone possible to join their walled garden and get locked in for life.

NO THANKS.

Where’s the Apple tax here?

In price and limitations. No compatibility with matter / thread, crazy high prices for an entry point, walled garden meaning no ownership. Not so long ago people were mad about LG tvs sending info to their company on what is going on around your tv, and now apple wants part of that cake as well.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, of course they're all matter compatible, Apple has supported matter and thread for years now, Apple TV, HomePod's, they're all thread boarder routers.

I'm not going to bother arguing price, but outright saying stuff you haven't even bothered to Google to check if you're correct is just insulting.

Can you list a cheaper alternative to say the HomePod mini or TV then?

I love Apple's computers and software, and I'm sure these are excellent Apple/LG products, but these price points are absolutely ridiculous. I can buy an indoor cam of the same or better specs for just $25 on Amazon, and an outdoor decent camera for ~$50. Charging more for the branding and the look won't work on me.

Issue is does that $50 camera come with a subscription service to actually use it? Does an alternative fire TV stick use the same level of hardware and is it sold at a loss to deliver ads every time you boot it up?
