No, what I meant was that keep the Windows 98\ME\2000 disk in the drive, and boot up the PC using the Windows 98 startup disk. Then switch to the CD-ROM containing the disk and run setup.exe from there. I'm 100% sure it works for Windows 98 and 2000, not that sure about ME.

hmmm ill see if a can get a real copy of xp...i dont really wanna split up this hard drive
thanks for ya help btw

I've been thinking...can i not make 1 partition, install windows 98 on it, and from there install windows xp?? Surely microsoft put in some easy way to upgrade to a later version in their bid to take user friendlyness to irritating extremes?

If you got it to boot off a 98 disk with CD support what has gone wrong? I said this way back at the start:
Find an old windows 9x disk. You will need to load smartdrv.exe from that. You actually don't have to but the initial part of the install is going to take a long time if you don't.

I forget where it is on the disk, I think its in the windows directory. So it would be <CD Drive>:\Windows\smartdrv.exe But it may be just in root, so you can remove that Windows part. Try to look at the disk in another comp to see where it is.

Once that is done put the XP disk in the cd drive. Then its <CD Drive>:\I386\winnt.exe and that will begin the install.
As far as I can tell that will work, but maybe I missed something in the 400 replies.

Sure u can do that. But that would just mess up everything on that hard drive, seeing as there's no way u can uninstall an OS. Or even better, do an upgrade from the old OS i.e. Windows 98 to XP using the upgrade option. It will make life much easier.

OK!
XP running now by copying
win98\smartdrv.exe then
I386\winnt.exe
a few files wouldnt copy but the installation seems ok
Thanks very much to everyone who gave me advice, I can't thank you enough, I couldn't of got it up and running without your help
