Something to look forward to: Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8687 to the Experimental Channel, introducing several improvements including a unified update experience designed to reduce the number of required reboots each month. The changes are part of Microsoft's Windows K2 initiative, which aims to address growing user complaints about Windows 11 and rebuild customer trust.

As part of the new update policy, Microsoft will bundle all available updates – including security patches, driver releases, bug fixes, firmware revisions, and .NET packages – into a single installation instead of processing them separately. The new update schedule will allow Windows to complete the installation with a single reboot, eliminating the need for multiple restarts to install different update packages.

Starting with the next monthly update cycle, updates will download in the background before waiting for a coordinated installation, ensuring that the entire process is completed with a single restart. Microsoft believes the unified update experience will address a longstanding complaint about the number of reboots users encounter each month just to keep their PCs up to date.

Following the implementation of the new policy, Windows Insiders in the Experimental and Beta Channels will receive weekly updates, while retail customers who manually update their computers will receive updates twice a month. Users in the Stable Channel who have not opted to receive early updates will continue to reboot their PCs once a month.

The unified update experience is part of Microsoft's Windows K2 initiative, which aims to improve the overall user experience by boosting system stability and fixing longstanding bugs rather than rolling out unwanted new features. According to CEO Satya Nadella, the initiative is intended to win back users by focusing on "core features and fundamentals that matter most to our customers."

The other major feature in Build 26300.8687 is an improved Search experience with better support for handling typos and misspellings. Microsoft explained that Windows can now recognize that users who type "utlook" into the search bar are likely looking for Outlook and will suggest the Outlook app in the search results.

The update also includes several changes to File Explorer, the Taskbar, Windows Setup, Input, and Remote Recovery Management. The changelog additionally mentions fixes for audio issues and the Settings app, as well as improved reliability for Notepad and other built-in Windows tools.

Dear Microsoft, if I may be so bold to suggest a simple set of core features and fundamentals: fix in 11 everything that works/is better in 10.
But then, that should have been part of 11's feature set at the time of release.
I would also like to suggest a way to regain user goodwill and trust but unfortunately I have zip. Good luck and I hope eventually things will get back on track.

I'd be happy, if Microsoft updates would work as they should, instead of causing so many problems. I don't care how many times the machine reboots as long as they get it right the first time....

I've never in all my computing years had even the slightest problem caused by an update.
Obviously many people have very different experiences.
I suppose the hardware is the real factor here as it's impossible to test for all possible hardware combinations. So what's the best configuration to avoid update troubles?
I think it's safe to say NO ONE KNOWS and the real reason I've never encountered these problems is LUCK.
Soon my main box and my laptop will be Apple machines. Whether my update-luck will hold is anybody's guess.
Life's exciting, isn't it? :)

Anyone remember the Windows XP days?
Don't even know how many reboots were required if you started with the initial release and then tried to get up to date through windows update but it was definitely too many.
Thankfully kind people shared .ISOs with the updates pre-applied.

I am wondering what changed at Microsoft. Definitely feels like someone new got hired somewhere in the windows feature/update pipeline.
Taskbar on the side, less reboots, no bing results in the start menu, fuzzy search (figures out typos), Controller support for a 'handheld' experience.

I'm actually kinda expressed, usually once a company starts ignoring customers they stubbornly stay on that track. Microsoft actually seems be listening and picking up the slack.

Now if they'd fix sleep mode that be neat, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.. please stop installing additional 'input lanaguages'. I just want 'US International' not additionally the UK one, not the Dutch one. Stop reinstalling it with updates, so sick of my keyboard not doing what I want after I unintentionally hit a hotkey to switch the 'input language'.
In XP it was easy to disable, Vista started making it hard to get to but didn't reinstall it. Windows 10 rarely reinstalled it. Windows 11 I've a hell of a time figuring out how to get rid of it.. and then it reappears randomly.

I don't want Windows Update installing their outdated drivers, I have current drivers installed! For some reason Microsoft likes to over write the drivers you have installed, even if they are newer versions. Windows Update already installs them all at once before rebooting, security updates, .NET, Defender...etc.

Check in Settings->Time & language->Typing->Advanced keyboard settings, make sure there are no additional languages under "Override for default input method" and the two checkboxes under "Switching input methods". Also check the settings links "Language bar options" and "Input language hot keys" below the checkboxes.

I never had a problem with Windows Updates, until I installed Windows 11 25H2. Nothing but problems, most of which I can figure out. However, I've been using computers since 1998, My first computer was an Acer mid-tower with Windows 98 installed. I'm 68 now, and it isn't fun figuring out what Microsoft Fk'ed up! I just want the operating system to WORK! I have an Acer Laptop 17 3" with Windows 7 Pro on it, it'll be 15yrs old end of November this year. Never had a ONE problem with either the machine or the operating system!! But, yeah I guess it might just be a little luck, to never have a problem with Windows 11 and their FK'ed up updates. :) I use Linux most of the time, because they do it like Windows used to it (usually better) back in the day.

In my post I st00pidly omitted the fact that I never upgraded to 11 so I have no experience with that particular ad platform. Sorry! My boxes run 10.
There's been a bit of a delay in the process but I expect to switch my main box and my laptop to Apple soon.
Mind you I'm well aware that the people who run Apple would kick in my door kill me and take all my stuff and money if they thought they could get away with it.
All the Big Tech companies are run by similar people. Vultures of the worst kind.
I can live with that, always have.
Also, these facts make fanboys more amusing. :joy:

Windows 10 is a pretty darn good operating system no doubt.

Auh, that certainly makes the difference to be sure...

Dear Microsoft,
Humans are such fickle creatures. They get tired of things easily--especially exasperating things--and move on to the 'next shiny thing', never looking back.
Good. Luck.
