New research links caffeine to slower aging at the cellular level

High on Caffeine: Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and it's found almost everywhere. People consume it through coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, and more. According to new research, caffeine may do more than just help you stay awake after a long night – it could have other surprising benefits as well.

A recently published study confirms what caffeine enthusiasts have suspected all along: the naturally occurring stimulant is not only great for waking up the mind but may also help keep the body healthier. Researchers are now shedding light on the fascinating cellular processes through which caffeine exerts these benefits – specifically, how it helps regulate the body's response to DNA damage and shifts in energy levels.

The research team, led by John-Patrick Alao, studied fission yeast, a single-celled organism that shares key similarities with human cells. They found that caffeine influences an ancient cellular energy pathway known as the target of rapamycin, a regulatory system that has existed in living organisms for hundreds of millions of years. Interestingly, caffeine does not appear to activate TOR directly.

Instead, the stimulant achieves similar effects by acting on another vital cellular complex: AMP-activated protein kinase. This enzyme plays a key role in maintaining cellular energy balance by activating the uptake of glucose and fatty acids when energy levels are low. AMPK is found in both yeast and human cells, highlighting the broader implications of the study.

"When your cells are low on energy, AMPK kicks in to help them cope," the study senior's author Charalampos Rallis explains, "and our results show that caffeine helps flip that switch." AMPK has also become an interesting target for diabetes drugs, and a potential mechanism to extend human lifespan with Rapamycin.

The researchers used their yeast-based model to observe caffeine's impact on these vital cellular processes. According to the study, caffeine has a significant effect on AMPK, influencing how cells grow, repair DNA damage, and respond to stress. Together, these mechanisms shape the body's broader response to aging and disease.

Alao noted that the findings help explain how and why caffeine may promote health and longevity. Future studies could explore whether similar benefits can be achieved more directly, like through lifestyle changes or the development of targeted new drugs.

Studies also show that people who are wealthier tend to drink more caffeine... and those people live longer... could it be the wealth? nah... must be the drug...

Does it also let you predict the future?

Caffeine is cheap, I doubt rich people drink more of it. If any thing, they probably drink less caffeine because they don't have to keep up with a normal daily grind.

Apparently, you haven’t seen the prices at Starbucks recently…

Purchased a PHILIPS latte go 4000 series on Black Friday 2023 and investment paid for itself within 6 months. Plus Starbucks doesn't do Organically modified coffee, sweeteners, milks etc. The wife and I are daily drinkers and the Starbucks bill would easily add up to hundreds of dollars per month . For us the Latte machine is a great healthy alternative to gmo overpriced coffee by Starbucks. The 3000 series sells for around $500 on Black Friday/prime day and also makes a great gift lol.1000017488.jpg

You really need to appreciate sarcasm… do I really need to use /s for you?!?
I understand sarcasm, just not the total lack of common sense required to understand that caffeine is cheap. A sarcastic argument that denies that reality just doesn't make sense, sarcasm is usually a sign of intelligence.

You originally claimed there are studies showing that rich people drink more caffeine when you actually just made that up.

Doing myself a favor and adding you to my ignore list.

Yeah… you really didn’t get the sarcasm in either post… let me guess, you think caffeine can predict the future? Sorry, should have mentioned I was simply alluding to Dune’s spice…

You're not paying for the caffeine at Starbucks. Its the 10 lbs of sugar you're paying for.
They do put a loads of sugar, pumps of sweeteners. When ordering we either modified to 1 pump of sweetener for the venti or no sweetener at all. Still comes out to be $8 minimum. 😳

But all the cigarettes that go with the coffee are a negative double multiplier to the longevity boost. Author should roll for a spell next time.

Caffeine puts me to sleep.

Nothing worse than consuming a product that is supposed to help keep you alert and it just simply puts you to sleep. When I was drinking things with caffeine in it, I could drink an energy drink or even one of those "5 hour" shots and within about 20 minutes I'd be passing out somewhere from being so tired...so I'd just go take a nap. Now, before anyone claims "it's all the sugars in the energy drinks that is making you sleepy" I even felt that way after drinking unsweetened black tea.

I just outright stopped any caffeine intake cold turkey about 5 years ago. I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms and I have no cravings for it. I actually feel better not consuming caffeine or any of those "energy boosting" beverages.

Metabolism, and hence diet, rules. Eat to support your body, and you will BOUNCE out of the rack each morning, and feel and look well throughout your life.

I drank coffee regularly for about three months in 1991, till one day I looked at my third cup and said to myself, ''Am I enjoying this?.....No'', and I quit. Same with smoking, a five-year habit (with some dipping in there alongside - I liked chew and dip...and spitting, HEHN.....more, but circumstances....), later that year. Of course, I didn't drink alcohol, and didn't have 'crosstalk' between smogs and coffee.

Caffeine puts me to sleep.

Yeah, long known and documented, hence the use of caffeine to tame those with three letter conditions. I knew a woman, any stimulant knocked her the **** out.
