Nintendo slashes Switch 2 production by 30% following weak holiday sales

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2 might be the fastest-selling console of all time, but that record-breaking launch is showing signs of slowing down. Because of its recent disappointing sales performance during the holidays, especially in the US, Nintendo has decided to reduce production of the console by a third.

According to a Bloomberg report, Nintendo will slash production of the Switch 2 this quarter from the originally planned six million units down to four million, a 30% drop. The reduced production is expected to continue into April.

The holidays is traditionally a major period for game and console sales, but this season didn't meet Nintendo's expectations. The lower-priced domestic version of the Switch 2 performed well, but US sales fell, leading to the production cut. Sources say rising prices and shortages stemming from the memory crisis were not factors in the decision.

Bloomberg writes that one of the reasons behind the sales decline is believed to be the game lineup. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was supposed to be the big holiday flagship that pushed more people into buying a Switch 2, but it struggled to sell one million copies in December, far below Nintendo's expectations.

The slowdown is a surprise because the Switch 2 has been a monster seller overall. As we reported in January, the machine closed out 2025 with 4.4 million units sold in the US, making it the fastest-selling home console launch in the country's history.

Nintendo's latest financial results were also strong on paper: Switch 2 hardware sales reached 17.37 million units worldwide by the end of December, and the company kept its full-year target of 19 million units unchanged.

It seems that Nintendo is facing a cooling-off period after the Switch 2's explosive debut. The original Switch enjoyed a holiday season that turned it into a phenomenon, but the follow-up appears to be settling into a more normal sales pattern. A $450 price tag, pricier software, and economic uncertainty in some markets were always likely to test demand once the launch rush faded.

As we noted earlier this month, the original Switch has now overtaken the DS to become Nintendo's best-selling console ever, reaching 155.37 million lifetime sales. That leaves it second only to the PlayStation 2 on the all-time list.

Nintendo makes a novel and cheap gaming machine.

The masses buy it up, pick up 2 or 3 games.

Nintendo iterates on the same machine two generations in a row, jacking up the price in the process.

The casuals don't see a point in buying the new one, only the core audience purchases.

Sales below outrageously high expectations of the prior gen.

rinse and repeat.

All the price increases and crying about component shortages only to cut production due to insufficient market performance... and not just by a little, but almost a third.

This information is entertaining me.

Uh, what?? it's actually way overpriced for what it is. Every other console maker has always sold their consoles below cost because they expect to recoup those losses on software sales, but not Nintendo. They charge almost the same price for their crappy consoles as the competition that actually sells you high end hardware.

Multiple generations ago Nintendo discovered that people were stupid enough to pay a premium price for a console with technology that is 3-4 generations behind everyone else. So now this is all they will ever do in the future too. In before the Nintendo zealots shout "but Kashim it's all about the games, hardware doesn't matter!" riiiight.

We're waiting for Luigis' Mansion 4 to show up.
Boooooring. Nintendo keeps rehashing the same tired old games from their tired old franchises and then wonder why sales are slumping. Maybe people are getting tired of paying $60-80 for the same game over and over again.

The Switch 2 is the biggest scam.

It can't run original Switch games at their full potential as all it takes is a Google search to find out how poorly many of those games perform and look on Switch 2 hardware because of its piss poor emulation.

Outrageously overpriced joycon controllers.

It can't even use Hard Drives for storage just overpriced flash cards.

KeyCards...yep...enough said.

While every tech news outlets keep publishing record breaking sales news of the Nintendo Switch 2, I have been waiting for this news to happen. That sales cannot sustain because,
1. There is a severe lack of Switch 2 exclusive games,
2. The console costs significantly more, and I am not including the cost of the overpriced micro SD express card,
3. There is no standout features. This is basically a faster version of the original Switch. The target market for Nintendo is generally family where I can have some engaging video game sessions with family and friends. Better graphics is welcome, but not priority. For hardcore gamers, there are other more powerful handheld options now.

The Switch 2 was breaking records only because it was mostly available at launch as compared to the original Switch. I had to wait for about a year before I managed to got an imported original Switch previously. On the other hand, Switch 2 is always available. To continue to move the console, I've seen very steep discounts about 2 months after launch. I got mine with a 27% discount from MSRP. Got it more to replace the very old original Switch that I game with my family, less so because of better graphics.
