No porn for you: seven more states push for ID checks on adult websites

A hot potato: Would you be happy to hand over your ID in order to view online pornography? Probably not, but it's a requirement being pushed by more seven states as a way of preventing minors from viewing material meant for adults' eyes only.

After Louisiana became the first state to require that residents provide ID when visiting major online porn sites, Florida, Kansas, South Dakota, and West Virginia introduced similar laws, according to a tracker from the Free Speech Coalition (via Ars Technica), while Arkansas, Mississippi, and Virginia appear close to passing their own age verification bills.

In Arkansas, the Protection of Minors from Distribution of Harmful Material Act (Senate Bill 66) would require state residents to provide a "digitized identification card" before viewing a pornographic website, defined as a site in which 33.33% or more of its contents is "harmful material."

That's a pretty ambiguous definition, but Motherboard notes that the Arkansas bill, which refers to pornography as a public health crisis, goes into detail on what it considers harmful to younger viewers; specifically, body parts and certain acts: nipple of the female breast, pubic hair, anus, vulva, or genitals; touching, caressing, or fondling of nipples, breasts, buttocks, the anus, or genitals; or sexual intercourse, masturbation, sodomy, bestiality, oral copulation, flagellation, excretory functions, exhibitions of sexual acts, or any other sexual act.

Websites are also considered harmful if the material taken as a whole lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors, which sounds like it could rule out a lot of non-porn sites.

The bill also warns of the dangers that come from minors being exposed to pornography, including negatively impacting brain function and development, exacerbation of emotional or medical issues, triggering deviant sexual arousal, promoting harmful sexual behaviors, and causing self-esteem issues or body image disorders.

Pornhub and other major porn sites owned by its parent company, MindGeek, now requires visitors connecting from Louisiana to verify their age before accessing the content, which involves creating an AllpassTrust account and then verifying their age using LA Wallet, a Louisiana government mobile app that creates a digital version of a Louisiana Driver's License.

It's not just the US where ID requirements for porn sites are being introduced. The UK's years-long push to introduce the same thing in the country could finally come into effect within the next six months as conservative MPs call for an amendment to the Online Safety bill.

The effectiveness of these bills is questionable. No matter how much these sites promise that they don't keep user data, most people aren't going to want to hand over their ID before spending an hour looking at hentai shoe porn (or whatever, no judgment). There are also VPNs for evading ID checks and the fact that many under-18s access adult material on social media platforms such as Twitter.

Very "effective" measure, it will be very difficult, almost impossible for them to find and download 100 videos and store them locally...

These adults can't understand teenagers whose bodies are in a different state. But if they don't understand, why are they leading and not working on the farms to produce something useful other than unworkable laws that create more problems than they resolve? Because good judgment is one of the basic requirements for someone to be a leader.

After all, any attempt by one entity to control the access to information, even in an indirect way, would be very dangerous to the survival and the life span of a civilization.

Think of the children

"nipple of the female breast" imagine the damage

as stated numerous times before me a simple law like this will stop any horny teenager

build the wall - I say

seriously educate your kids - that a lot of porn is not a reality , and not a way to act in life

Its all good until that information is being used to "categorize" you. That's my only concern. I don't need the world knowing EVERYTHING I do or don't do.

Why not educate them about how fake porn is and how it creates ridiculous expectations of sexuality? Women are objects in porn, not real people. This needs to be prioritized over banning it & hopefully people of their own volition will stop consuming it.

This sets a very dangerous precedent. The moment I saw "digital ID" I IMMEDIATELY thought of how that will be used to track you online and assign data to a real person. All because of a "public health crisis".

That is SO easy to abuse. Imagine this, some states say "racism" and "sexism", by which I mean "anything that hurts our fee fees", are public health crises. So how long until states start requiring your digital ID to access the internet, destroying all hope of privacy or anonymity? Just THINK of how many ramifications could be force on people for not toeing the government line, how many government and private industry employees would be able to ruin the lives of those they have a bone to pick. You think police power abuse is bad? Hoh boy, you havent seen anything yet!
Can't watch porn but we can can use state money to tell kids about what genders than can be in public schools. The double standards in this clown world are amazing.
Porn addiction is a real thing, and its a real problem, especially in the "divergent" sexualities. These patters start in adolescence, and frankly the only reason I think anyone supports the state doing this is because parents WONT. No government will actually grow a spine and tell parents to do their jobs for once.

Doesnt make this a good idea, at all, but that's the push. Make the nanny state do all the raising of kids.

I believe that any prohibition will only lead to an overdemand. This is not the right approach and we have history to tell us about this.
And hey can force to implement those rules to US based porn content websites. How can you apply this to other countries?
In last 15 years I can find anything online, no more DC++ or Torrents so no need for local storage.

Funny that this law should as well prohibit kids from religious indoctrination ;)

Same with sugar - lets ban all fizzy drinks!

anything can lead to addiction. Reading books as well.

Why stop there? There are several other issues, I don't think I need to mention them, that these states have in their bag of boogeymen to scare the pants off of any God fearing, bible thumping adult. But, hey, they are all for getting government out of our lives, aren't they? 🤣

As it see it, its the conservative norm these days while they say out of the other side of their mouths that they are all for getting government out of our private lives. Uh-huh.

Really the Land of the Free

Missouri thankfully still allows toddlers to openly carry guns.

USA has had a messed up attitude to sex and violence for a long time.
In Europe no one cared much about nudity in TV programs - yet was a big no no in the USA in 70s , 80s etc - bet porn on cable tv did well in the south.
Yet TV programs showing women being shot were not problem at all - nice way for lead character to have a little sad guilt free moment ( no need to dump her for new eye candy , lingering T& A camera angles( dressed )) - before a new love interest in the next weeks show.

There are probably millions of businesses operating porn sites either directly or indirectly. These laws will mean nothing and only a facade.

No need to wait for next weeks show. It's in the commercials:

I'm pretty much, well in truth, completely addicted to refined sugar and caffeine.

In PA soft drinks aren't exactly considered "food". While all other foodstuffs are exempt from sales tax, my drug of choice Coke, (as well as many others), are not.

Its sort of true. PET scans of drugs addicts when high and PET scans of religious people who are having religious experiences both show the same parts of the brain being active.
quite common for addicts to become born again - or to be targeted for baptism

I'm always cynical about govt preaching about drugs ( I personally have no interest in taking ) - but crystal meth seems to have no upsides - no idea why people with a functioning life actually start taking it - as very high addiction rate from low exposure rate . Every ***** thinks they are special - oh I won't get addicted , I'm special - Cigarette addiction is probably so beguiling - I smoke 30 cigarettes - I'm not addicted - yet it could be the 31st one or 51st - believe younger people more vulnerable - TBF in my late 50s never smoked - couldn't imagine how much I would have to endure to become addicted - my body would be rebelling for the first part I imagine.
You also hear people blaming their gambling addiction on being super lucky first time out to races or casino and they want that high again - may be a grain of truth - but they must of had a pre-disposition - also heard betting and losing the house is just as rewarding as an emotional high for serious addicts - quite of like love tragics

OK Kidz, here's a sobering piece of failed legislation which would have prevented law enforcement from tracking women's menstrual cycles online....! It goes to show how invasive states have become with anti-abortion laws, and how shockingly lazy women have become, needing phone apps to track their periods.

And here you thought that the age verification for porn sites was intrusive..
