Taken in context, Marx's statement illustrated the fact that religion, and the supposed rewards that Jesus' teaching offered, afforded "hope to the hopeless." Sic: "All of life's hardships will be gone when you reach my father's kingdom", Thus it became, "the opium of the people". As people become more affluent, suffer less hardship, they rend to drift further away from , "religion's necessity". Opiates have the "off label usage", of being "antidepressant".In fact, one of the weaker and least addictive of these, "Tramadol", was even studied for that potential usage. Religion has it's own function as an antidepressant, and thus Marx easily came to his comparative conclusion. .

Organized religion quickly realized its potential as a way to, "control the masses through fear". IDK it it was Plato or Socrates, (or another Greek Philosopher), who said something to the effect that, "any religion needs an unprovable truth and an unprovable punishment to be effective". Organized religion, primarily the Roman Catholic Church, was quick to seize upon this axiom, utilizing it for its own power and enrichment.

Evolution has "gifted" us with mental powers so "advanced", that our egos cannot come to grips with that fact that there is a final "end to our consciousness". This is why we become "easy prey", to the seductive appeal of an eternal,"heaven".

Moving on, most all of society's troubles today, are, (IMHO), caused by the influence and application of propaganda, coupled with the inability of a large segment of the populace to "think for themselves". Advertising incorporates all the propaganda techniques employed by governments to bring about a conclusion that the products they offer will, "enhance our existence", nor can we, "live without them". After which innate human greed kicks in and does the rest of the work for them.

These anti-porn laws are essentially unenforceable to catch people using the Tor browser (or similar technology) which routes traffic through the Tor network. So a porn site would no idea if the traffic was coming from Florida (Take that, DeSantis!), Texas (Take that, Abbott!), Kazakhstan, New Zealand, India, France, Uruguay or Cambodia? So how can a porn site possibly stop American teens from viewing when it cannot determine where the trafic is coming from?

Easy, you just force American based porn sites to block all incoming traffic without the user providing an ID. It would take years for all the affected sites to be heard in court about the law suits they definitely would file. And obviously it's a toss up as to whether they would eventually prevail.

Or, the porn sites could simply move their servers to "friendlier states". Then, the onus would be on ISPs to block all outgoing traffic locally. Ironically, the tech/computer savvy Gen Z kidz are likely the only ones who would be able to get through, while lonely old timers would be the ones stymied by the restrictions. Besides, to people who were convinced to send money to "Nigerian Princes", submitting to be tagged with a digital ID wouldn't be that much of an imposition.at all.

Given the current SCOTUS initiative in striking down Roe v. Wade, it's not even remotely possible that it would strike down a state law such as this.

"Just use a VPN", is the obvious knee jerk reaction, but it wouldn't work under all circumstances.

A while back P.I.A. was apparently forced to shut down their servers in Russia. I have to assume that was in response to a situation similar to this.

The only comprehensive solution to this bullsh!t would be for red state occupants to, "vote blue". It wouldn't take that many of those people who vote Republican out of sheer force of habit to effect a change.

But, then again, how can you possibly reason with a herd mentality that voted Marjorie Taylor Greene in for a second term?

Unfortunately, that axiom is insufficient in harshness and in scope to be applicable to mothers in the US.

Adapted to to the current familial and social situations in the US, the wording would be thus; "the mother of sociopaths is always pregnant, yet is adamantly unwilling to accept responsibility for her failures and incompetence as a parent after bearing them, and while raising them".

I realize that isn't as lyrical or succinct as your proverb. But, it is a lot closer to reality.

As for our politicians it would be, "the only way for imbeciles to triumph, is to have even dumber people vote them into office".

There is an intense, unbreakable, kindred bond, between "dumb and dumber", which sadly transcends common sense, and manifests itself quite often in the results of our elections..

The word pornography was invented in the 19th century. Now it is used as a rhetorical straightjacket to frame erotica in a negative light, as if all erotica is pornography.

The concept of pornography also was that erotica is demeaning to people because it prostitutes the soul. Pornography = writing about prostitution. This claim is religious in nature and thus is a very poor fit for a secular society's lens.

It's sad but also amazing to see how easily an entire nearly global population of billions can be captured by terminology some guy invented because he had a particular axe to grind.

When I was a pubescent lad, (many decades ago), we would ask one another, "do you play with yourself". If the answer was, "NO", that was the sure sign that the .person did indeed, flirt with the prospect of going blind via a sinful route.

In any event, the basic concept can be distilled and simplified thus; "the first sign of doing anything immoral or illegal is denying it". Accordingly, you can bet your "crusader", campaigns around the house with his pants at half mast.

I guess this proves that blue states have better educational systems, since most of the inhabitants know that porn is free on the web. No need for subscriptions..
