Hi. I'm cleaning up my family's PC, and recently had some problems with AVG detecting Win32/zbot.g as well as vbscript generic trojans. So I came here to seek some advice. Something that concerned me at the end of the GMER scan was the dialog message it gave me: "GMER has found system modification cased by ROOTKIT activity". Here's the logs:

==== End Of File ===========================

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help you with the system.

While I do see some entries to be removed and others to identify, I'm not seeing the rootkit entry you mention in GMER. It does indicate there is a hidden module though so we'll look into that. There are also a few entries specific to you on the internet, so I may have you submit files for identification..

It appears that you may have other languages besides English on the system. But I'm puzzled. You participate in Usenet on the Netherlands but also have Chinese and Korean fonts. Is that correct? It could make an entry hard to ID on a scan. For instance, these appear in your installed programs: (question marks are in the log- they're not mine!)
???????
??5
?Google ???
IE: ?????? - c:\program files\thunder network\thunder\program\GetUrl.htm
IE: ?????????? - c:\program files\thunder network\thunder\program\GetAllUrl.htm

Please do not use the Thunder Network while I am helping you. This is not a virus or a Trojan. It is detected as a "potentially unwanted program". It is an download program. It gets installed Browser Helper Object.
There are also some entries with question marks in the Trusteer/Rapport entries
==========================================
I am going to have you run Combofix. It won't run with AVG on the system so you will have to remove it temporarily: Download AppRemover and save to the desktop.
  1. Double click the setup on the desktop> click Next
  2. Select “Remove Security Application”
  3. Let scan finish to determine security apps
  4. A screen like below will appear:

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

While I do see some entries to be removed and others to identify, I'm not seeing the rootkit entry you mention in GMER. It does indicate there is a hidden module though so we'll look into that.
I forgot to mention that it was the hidden module in GMER that was coloured red, so I think that's the module that GMER was talking about.

The programs with the question marks are chinese programs, and my father downloaded Usenet.nl to try it out. It could be uninstalled though, as it's not used anymore. So yeah, it's a bit weird but the chinese fonts and the Usenet.nl programs are meant to be there.

The log file for ESET is below. Should I paste the ComboFix log here too, or could I attach the file? The file itself is 423kb, so it would take roughly 9 posts to show you the complete log...

Okay on the language- I thought that was it.

Regarding size of Combofix log: 423 kilobits = 54 144 bytes
I see routine size logs that are in this area: 184,764,891,136 bytes

When you open Notepad, make sure you click on Format and uncheck Word Wrap. If the wrap is on, each entry can take up to 3 lines with spaces after. And the logs will look fragmented. If this is the problem, copy the log to Notepad and uncheck Word Wrap.

One other part can can make for a long log is the Snapshot section. Sometimes, Combofix can spit out a very lengthy Snapshot. If that is the cause of such a lengthy log, you can cut that section out of the log, being very careful not to remove any other sections or entries, then paste it here.

I can't think of any other reason to generate a log needing 9 posts. But it does need to be pasted in.

I meant 423 kilobytes :) But, it was the snapshot section that was contributing to the majority of the file.

Here's the ComboFix log:

We have you uninstall Combofix and the backups it created when finished.
So either you ran Combofix on your own last year or whoever helped you didn't have you uninstall it when finished-or-you just didn't uninstall it:

Did you use this version, already installed from 2010? If so, you will need to uninstall this Combofix, the download again from the link I gave you and repeat the scan.

Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

Now D/L, run and scan again.

I can remove the Usenet/NL for you and anything else that need to be removed, but I want to be sure that you are running the most current version of Combofix.

My father says that the old ComboFix installation was from when he ran it before. Obviously he forgot to uninstall it! However, I did run a newly downloaded version. I've uninstalled ComboFix completely from this computer, and re-downloaded and re-run it, just in case it made any difference. The new log can be found below.

Also, thank you for being patient with me, and your continued help :)

All of these type of programs work from a database. And the programs themselves occasionally have to be revised for some reason. These scans that we use are for free versions, meant only to be used here and later removed. We also advise, as does the author of the program and all the download sites that a user not use Combofix on their own. It's not a 'keep on the system for security' program. It has a specific use, for specific problems. IT makes backups. These are all good reasons not to keep it on a system.
When we have you unintal it at the end, it removes the program, the backups it created and the logs.
==============================
Question please before I start on the script. There are several of these entries: They are same date and time and all tmp files, all FOT, just different numerical string:
2011-02-11 21:58 1409 -c--a-w- c:\windows\system32\tmpE4214.FOT

Possible help with type of file here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOT
I can't identify these. Since I know that other languages are on the system, will you check Properties and let me know what they are and if you added them?

I can remove the Usenet.nl. Anything else that's obsolete?

Checking the properties of the FOT files doesn't give me any information at all. All the properties were blank. And I don't know where the files came from. After looking in the system32 folder, I can see that there are more of these FOT files than listed in the ComboFix log. Is this significant at all?

I can remove the Usenet.nl. Anything else that's obsolete?
Usenet.nl is the only obsolete program on this computer at the moment.

Regarding the .FOT file extension:
FOT files contain font information associated with Installed TrueType Font. FOT files are part of the Windows 3.x library, and are related to .TTF files. Taking it one step further: TTF is a file extension for a font file developed by Apple. TTF stands for True Type Font. TTF files and currently by both Apple and Microsoft as a raster font format. As a raster font, it can be scaled to any size without quality loss or pixelation, and the stored image appears the same when printed as it does on-screen (see: what you see is what you print -- WYSIWYP).

So it appears that on 2011-02-11 21:58 , these 7 files each of thee same size, 1409, someone added these fonts. Since they are all tmp files, I am putting them in the script for removal. Note please> while you may be seeing additional .FOT files on the system, I can only act on what I see

I've made a screenshot of the other FOT files I mentioned in a previous post, which you can see below. I've highlighted them so you can see them better.
fc0j13.jpg

Would you advise removing these files too?

If you want to remove the other FOT entries, that's up to you. No more screen shots please.

I note that some of the entries I had in the script are still on the system. There are numerous entries for the Thunder Network for instance. And I have advised twice before to remove the entries from the Trusted Zone.

Are you copying the entire contents of the code box with the script?

Hi Bobbye,

I've removed those 3 sites from the trusted zone now. It doesn't look like you mentioned removing them until your post with the script.

Are you copying the entire contents of the code box with the script?
I definitely copy and pasted the entirety of the script into the text file. Do you want me to run the script again?

All but one of the Web Thunder entries I had in the script all still on the system. I'll set up new script based on what is in the current log:

Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:

Advise you take this off of startup: SmartDefragBootTime

The antivirus program (Avira AntiVir) has popped up while my father was using the computer, and it said that a virus had been found. So I had AntiVir remove the virus, and it did a quick system scan, but this just caused more viruses to be found. I repeatedly had the program remove the viruses, and more viruses were detected every time. In the end there were over 2000 infected files found by AntiVir, before I decided to reboot the computer into safe mode and do a full system scan.

Here's a list of the virus names I could get from the scan logs (when it did its quick system scans): W32/Ramnit.C, GEN/PwdZIP, HTML/Drop.Agent.AB, TR/Rootkit.Gen, TR/Trash.Gen. I noticed most of the infected files were either DLL, EXE, or HTML files. Most of the DLL files were from legitimate programs such as the Java Runtime Environment and QuickTime. I've seen the same problem on the PC before a while ago, which I thought I'd fixed, but it looks like it's come back again...

Before rebooting to do the full system scan, I took a quick look at the list of running processes to see if there was anything out of place. I saw that there were a number of iexplore.exe processes running, but there were no Internet Explorer windows open. I did a quick search on Google, and this seems to match the behaviour of the W32/Ramnit.C virus.

So I'm putting off running the ComboFix script until the system's been scanned. Do you have any advice on what else I should do? Or should I just run the script so that you can get more information?

Sorry- internet was down.

I am very sorry to have to inform you the you will have to reformat/reinstall the OS. We consider Ramnit an incurable file infector. Here is some information on it for you:

Win32/Ramnit.A is a file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, and .HTML/HTM files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files.

The infected .HTML or .HTM files may be detected as Virus:VBS/Ramnit.A. Win32/Ramnit.A!dll is a related file infector often seen with this infection. It too has IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .dll and .HTML/HTM files and opens a back door that compromises your computer. This component is injected into the default web browser by Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A which is dropped by a Ramnit infected executable file.

With this particular infection the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Why? The malware injects code in legitimate files similar to the Virut virus and in many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irreparable. The longer Ramnit.A remains on a computer, the more files it infects and corrupts so the degree of infection can vary.
*********************************************************************
Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A with a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are infested with a smörgåsbord of malware and a major source of system infection.
************************************************************************
In my opinion, Ramnit.A is not effectively disinfectable, so your best option is to perform a full reformat as there is no guarantee this infection can be completely removed. In most instances it may have caused so much damage to your system files that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. Further, your machine has likely been compromised by the backdoor Trojan and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if your anti-virus reports that the malware appears to have been removed.

Whenever a system has been compromised by a backdoor payload, it is impossible to know if or how much the backdoor has been used to affect your system...There are only a few ways to return a compromised system to a confident security configuration. These include:
• Reimaging the system
• Restoring the entire system using a full system backup from before the backdoor infection
• Reformatting and reinstalling the system

Important Note:: If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and any online activities which require a username and password. You should consider them to be compromised. You should change each password using a clean computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Failure to notify your financial institution and local law enforcement can result in refusal to reimburse funds lost due to fraud or similar criminal activity.

You will find excellent reformat/reinstall instructions here:
http://www.tech-101.com/tutorials/356-tutorial-windows-install-repair-xp-vista.html

Hi Bobbye,

Shortly after scanning the system and finding that the system was still being continuously infected, we decided to reformat the PC, so its no problem :) I'll make sure to tell my father changes all his passwords (I don't use the computer as I have my own). Thank you for all your help Bobbye, and I'll try to make sure my parents don't mess up the computer again!

I'm glad you went ahead with the reformat/reinstall. Tell you dad that he needs to monitor any online financial transactions as there is no way to know how much the system was compromised.

Sorry to have had to deliver bad news, but you did the right thing. Here are some tips to help keep the system clean:
Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
    [o] Safe Settings
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o]Avast Free Version
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
