Solved NTDLL.DLL and Service Pack 3 install failure

Bad news.

I ran the OTL Cleanup without any problem, but I just tried to install SP3 and got the same message I got before, that ntdll.dll is in use by another program. It won't let me install SP3 until I close whatever program is running, but I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

I am installing through Windows Updates, if I understand you correctly. I just click on the yellow shield on the task bar, and it prompts me to install SP3. Nothing else is running as far as I can tell.

I downloaded the SP3 update from the link you provided, and got the same error. It happens when the installer says it is initializing.

This is so frustrating. What do you suggest I try?

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Try to install SP3 now.

How do I make sure I don't disable keyboard or touchpad entries? I don't see any listed in the Startup window.

Here it is:

Didn't work. I got the same error regarding "ntdll.dll" being in use.

While the SP3 install was extracting, I got a new error. It said:

Wmiprvse.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c910aeb" references memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

I had a choice to click OK to terminate the program, or Cancel to debug the program. I chose Ok, and the window went away and the install proceeded as it had before.

After I got the ntdll error, I was asked about sending error report to Microsoft. I looked at the error report, and it said this is what was included in the error report:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT7.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT7.tmp

Is any of this info useful to figuring out my problem?

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder and empty it.
Restart computer and try installation again.

It would not allow me to delete the following file: Perflib_Perfdata_644. It said it was being used by another program, but nothing else was open.

I scanned the file with Malwarebytes. It found nothing malicious.

I ran TFC again, and it rebooted. When I looked at my temp folder again, it had new files in it. Perflib_Perfdata_644 was gone, replaced by same file name with number 714 at the end. Still could not delete it.

Also some other files. I could delete all except a file inside a folder named "setup"; the file name was "setup.lok", I think. I scanned with Malwarebytes, and it found nothing wrong.

I just opened my temp folder again, and it has a new filed: Perflib_Perfdata_bdc. Will not let me delete.

Now the setup.lok file is gone.

Should I try the SP3 install again even though my temp folder is not empty?

No luck. Same error at same point of install, when it says it is inspecting my current configuration. Under Details, it says it is Performing Inventory.

Is there any significance that my "temp" folder is not capitalized?

My temp folder currently has a new file: hpqddsvc.log, along with the perflib file that is still there.

Any ideas?

Microsoft doesn't provide support for XP unless you have SP 3 installed.

I guess I should go ahead and redo those Startup and Services settings in msconfig?

That last link you suggested had the answer: unlocker.exe. I downloaded the program, ran it, and it allowed me to unlock and delete the offending file. Once that was done, SP3 installed without a hitch.

I am not sure how to undo the changes I made to Startup and Services in msconfig because I don't remember which ones were set to run and which were not. I have selected the ones that seem important to me, and the computer seems to be running fine. Do I need to worry about getting that exactly as it was before?

Thanks again for your help.
