Nvidia unifies desktop, notebook GPU driver releases

Nvidia today announced an initiative that will see its desktop and notebook GPU driver updates released on the same date. Every time the company releases a desktop graphics driver for Windows Vista or 7, it will also roll out a notebook equivalent.

Nvidia's "Verde" drivers have existed for a while, but this marks the first time the company has publicly committed to a steady, unified release schedule. The next driver release is due in May, and although the desktop and mobile GPU drivers won't be available in the same package, they will be pushed out on the same day.

Most existing and forthcoming laptops are covered by the Verde driver, such as systems with discrete GPUs, hybrid solutions and feature Nvidia IGPs, and Optimius-equipped systems. That said, multi-vendor hybrid configurations, such as those with integrated Intel and discrete Nvidia graphics, are unsupported. This news follows AMD's decision to offer monthly updates for ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chips beginning with Catalyst 10.3.

Thanks for the update. I have a question though; do you guys know when exactly these drivers will be released? Is there always an exact date? Like, let's say, every 15th of every two months or something like that?

The dates will precisely coincide with releases of new Duke Nukem Forever "it's still real and will be released one day" tidbits and videos.

This is great for Nvidia Notebook users. New drivers will see enhanced performance and reliability. Can't also wait for the Flash 10.1 to take advantage of these new Nvidia drivers.
