Old hard drive files

I pulled the old hard drive out of my broken surface laptop and connected it to my new surface via a USB connector. The new laptop sees the old drive but won't let me open it, saying I don't have admin rights. I don't ever remember setting any admin rights on the old machine. How can I override this? I need the files off the old hard drive.
