Op-ed: Are we ready for 4K?

I think you should take a deep breath and remember that you've come to an enthusiast site and told everyone not to be enthusiastic about new tech.
Indeed, there is so much wrong with everything he wrote that even if it wasn't posted here it would still be a sad statement.

. ...[ ].... These "4k is unnecessary" threads are identical to old threads we had when moving from 1024x768 many years ago on Techspot and whatever our old name was before that. Just go with the flow and be mainstream if you're going to be mainstream... but don't pee on our cutting-edge parade.
I wouldn't make a direct comparison to those old time threads. The first plasma sets from Pioneer were on Best Buy's sales floor at up to 10 grand, when 32" SD tube sets were going fo $300.00 a pop.

Then, you couldn't get a flat panel capable of color matching for imaging work. So the photogs were using CRT monitors for Pholtoshop instead.

Now we're at 4k. At some point you have to ask yourself, do I need all this resolution, do I only think I need it, or do I have to have it because it's being rammed down my throat.

In truth 1080p is fine for TV up to about 40" to 46". After that, you might want to bump the pixel count to double, (1.41 x 1080p).

Truth to tell, I saw the original, "Transformers" movie in IMAX, and it looks way better on any of my home flat panels. I won't bore you with stories of massive barrel distortion and edge light fall off in the IMAX presentation. And for the record, IMAX has a pant load more potential resolution available than 1080p

In any event, simply because this is a tech oriented site, no one needs to be shouted down because they say, "I can live without 4K". I can even live without Haswell, so there.:p

Meanwhile, Nvidia’s beastly GeForce GTX 780 Ti eats the 290X alive at conventional resolutions

Are you serious? 7%-15% is eating alive now?

you’ll be dealing with AMD’s persisting driver and frame-pacing issues

Oh Ok. I see now, you just don't like AMD. If you would be bothered to look at some of the latest reviews around the web including your own site you will see AMD driver team has been working to fix this issues for some time now and the issue is almost fixed in most games.

A 290x is is $530 to $550 and a 780ti is $650 to $700 so the 780TI is a 7-15% better you pay a little more you get a little more but a fan boy has to turn that into crushing lol

You poor bastards....I'm happy with my 4K monitor on my shiny new Mac Pro and I 'm already thinking about getting another one...keep on whining "it will not happen for 2-3 yrs"...ridicoulous...

Oh thank you ever so much for stopping by to tell us just how special you really, (think), you are.

Why don't you fire up that big, bad, rig of yous, and look up how to spell, "ridiculous" . You can probably justify needing 4K for that.
