. ...[ ].... These "4k is unnecessary" threads are identical to old threads we had when moving from 1024x768 many years ago on Techspot and whatever our old name was before that. Just go with the flow and be mainstream if you're going to be mainstream... but don't pee on our cutting-edge parade.
I wouldn't make a direct comparison to those old time threads. The first plasma sets from Pioneer were on Best Buy's sales floor at up to 10 grand, when 32" SD tube sets were going fo $300.00 a pop.
Then, you couldn't get a flat panel capable of color matching for imaging work. So the photogs were using CRT monitors for Pholtoshop instead.
Now we're at 4k. At some point you have to ask yourself, do I need all this resolution, do I only think I need it, or do I have to have it because it's being rammed down my throat.
In truth 1080p is fine for TV up to about 40" to 46". After that, you might want to bump the pixel count to double, (1.41 x 1080p).
Truth to tell, I saw the original, "Transformers" movie in IMAX, and it looks way better on any of my home flat panels. I won't bore you with stories of massive barrel distortion and edge light fall off in the IMAX presentation. And for the record, IMAX has a pant load more potential resolution available than 1080p
In any event, simply because this is a tech oriented site, no one needs to be shouted down because they say, "I can live without 4K". I can even live without Haswell, so there.
