Open Forum: Are you upgrading to Windows 11?

I don't think it's any different from any other thread. If you can log in to comment in these forums, you can comment in this one. It's not special if that's what you mean.
As I understood , (perhaps incorrectly), the last iteration of, "Weekend open forum", was such that anybody viewing the thread could comment, without having to log in. Apparently our software was configured specifically to allow this.. It was a (mini) disaster, and subsequently discontinued So yeah, that was my question, if this thread was outside of normal, need to login,

Aren't you going to wish me a "happy fifteenth anniversary". Although admittedly, you have me beat by about a year and a half.

I think, "was configured," is the operative phrase. Actually I wasn't sure so before I answered you the first time I logged out to see. I found that you needed to be logged in to comment.

As you wish, happy 15th anniversary, captaincranky.

No, not until I upgrade my PC which will be still a long time. I also dont care about support, if it works, I will keep using w10 even until it's not supported anymore.

Plus the right click menu context is a huuuge let down. A simple task in w10 requires extra clicks in w11. Nope. Until they fix this and other sh1t, I won't install w11.

I tried the upgrade but before the day was out I reverted to Windows 10. My homebuilt system was 100% compatible with Win11, but I found far too many things I needed to work around -- like truncated context menus and needing to drill down thru other context menus to do something like simple connect to a network share. Where's the file explorer ribbons I was using? Replaced by a menu containing nonsense icons with no hover help telling you what they do? Volume control had so many things other than a volume slider. Lack of "no mouse/no touch" usability. I think it is time for Microsoft to fire their usability staff and hire people that know the the fk they are doing.

To be brutally honest I did not find enough useful features in Windows 11 to make me want to find workarounds/or back-out fall that to continue using it. To me Windows 11 is a replay of Windows ME/Vista/Windows 8 all over again.

Dev channel on my gaming desktop.... So far so good.

Bypassing the cpu requirement(7th gen Intel) on my laptop and installing as I type. If I can't get updates down the road I'll just install Linux on this laptop as I dont game on it anyway.

Absolutely no interest. The use of VBS by default, the L3 cache latency, the TPM 2.0 requirement (security my arse, that is for DRM and good luck convincing me otherwise), and the copying of osx with the center taskbar while doing nothing about high resource usage was all enough to convince me away from using it. Testing it at work and trying to work with the "new" context menu blasted any chance I had of trying it later, screw that, I dont need baby's first menu with all the useful stuff removed or hidden.

It's so infuriating to see MS found plenty of time to butcher the context menu and taskbar system and the folders in what was the start menu, but STILL HASNT FINISHED MOVING CONTROL PANEL TO SETTINGS, something set in motion with windows 8 in 2012!

Absolute garbage OS. The only windows box I have left is my ultimate windows XP box, which now dual boots 7 for some newer titles, and my media box because I still havent gotten blu-ray playback 100% good on linux yet.

I upgraded my 2in1 Thinkpad and Windows 11 is a great upgrade.... *asterisk* for anyone with a touchscreen and a pen. But that is it, on my desktop I wont bother for atleast a year, especially with this Ryzen L3 problem.

I "upgraded" to Win11 last night and I've encountered SO many bugs, I've created a folder just to track them all.

For me, the most concerning "bug" I'm encountering is totally random File I/O issues where files are not written properly (and sometimes NOT AT ALL), overwriting old versions despite saving edited items to a new name, and applications not recognizing their own file types to open them.

I used Win10 Pro for years and experienced no such issues. I have a mixture of every drive type from one HDD, multiple SSD's, and an M2 boot drive (plus multiple USB flash drives.)

The problems I've been experiencing are random and often can't be reproduced, making identifying a cause nearly impossible.

So far, I've been able to compensate for these rare file errors, but if the problems continue, I could end up going back to Win10 (I made a backup) til MS issues a patch (I'm still trying to confirm whether or not the problems are unique to my configuration.)

Ryzen 3 3100.
Samsung EVO970 500GB M.2 boot drive.
Various small SSD drives
2TB WD HDD for data storage.
nVidia 970
Win11 Pro (upgraded over well-tuned Win10 Pro install.)

I upgraded this computer from within Windows 10 with no faults and no errors. The upgrade ran fast, when it restarted it was setup just like the Win 10 was but with the new Windows 11 UI. I don't like the taskbar and reverted the troublesome right-click context menu with a registry entry to ignore the new dll so the old taskbar style is in place.
This build of Windows is fast, the code is better. There's not a lot to dislike here, the interface and Windows are amazingly good. Just like with all Windows builds some ppl will decry it while others work with it. This is running in place of a $199 retail copy of Windows 10, if it's not suitable it will be retired early. I don't expect that to happen.

I only last year started using Windows 10 because Discord was being a pain about streaming with Windows 7.

Windows 10 has been a big enough pain with it resetting my default media player apps almost every time it updates. I won't 'upgrading' again until I see a lot of user feedback saying it's worth the investment.

When will you upgrade to Windows 11?

a) When the sea level rises by 1 meter because of global warming

b) Two days after COVID-19 is defeated and no vaccination is required anymore

c) Immediately after Tesla releases a reliable self-driving system

d) As soon as Windows 12 is released

My CPU is not supported so it isn't a case of will or won't, MS have taken the decision away from me to "can't"

Actually you can....

Successful on 2 devices do far not (really compatible)

The new skin looks to me like a Linux skin. With Microsoft incorporating more Linux functions within Windows, IMO, that's where we're eventually heading with Windows. They are preparing for it. Linux is winning.

Ive read people have, which is great until they (MS) decide they aren't going to support the CPU or not provide updates (something that has been mentioned before, you can install but may not get future updates). I'll wait a few years to see what happens 😉
