OtterBox best known for its protective smartphone and tablet cases, is taking its talents outdoors. The Fort Collins, Colorado-based company is jumping into the premium rugged cooler market with a new product line called the Venture.

No doubt inspired by products like The Coolest Cooler, the OtterBox Venture Cooler will be offered in three sizes – 25, 45 and 65 quarts. It can reportedly keep ice in a solid state for up to 14 days, is “certified bear-resistant” (when using the optional locking kit) and has been drop-tested on all sides and edges for durability (both while empty and full).

Like other premium coolers, the Venture isn’t just about keeping stuff cold. Utilizing a mounting system, users can attach a variety of accessories such as a cutting board, a bottle opener, a dry storage tray, cup holders and a drybox clip to further expand functionality.

Other noteworthy features of the cooler include anti-slide rubber feet, integrated handles that double as tie-down anchors and a slanted interior bottom for easy draining. The Venture is designed and manufactured in the US and comes backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Pricing is set at $249.99 for the Venture 25 and scales up to $349.99 and $399.99 for the Venture 45 and Venture 65, respectively. They’ll be offered in Hudson (white and blue), Back Trail (Realtree Xtra camo) and Ridgeline (tan and green) color schemes.

Look for them to launch on OtterBox’s website and through Best Buy in early June.

$250 for a cooler!? Thanks, but I'll wait for the generic brand that costs $50 and doesn't say Otter or Yeti on it. Maybe it wont' be 'Bear Proof' but then again... I don't own Volcano insurance either.

I'm clearly the one who doesn't get it, because they must be selling. I've heard Yeti stuff is doing well - I just don't get it.

That market is already saturated .... now if you can build a protective case for my car body, house roof, or my poor old bald head .... I want to hear more!

While I wasn't thrilled with paying $30 for a can cooler, the Yeti I have is by far the best can cooler I have ever owned. Is it worth the price? I guess that depends on how much you like cold beer on a golf course.

Nothing prepares you for everything in this life, like an aluminium-made coffin. And you can even sleep in it ;)

Typically this stuff is stupid expensive, but it's really damned good at its job. My Yeti rambler does ridiculous stuff.

It is how capitalism works. They have to persuade you to stop reaching for that Styrofoam cooler that you can pay for with the spare change in your pocket to pony up for the $399 Venture 45 and even make you feel bad when you get to the campsite and whip out the Styrofoam to see all the other campers with their $400 coolers.
In North America it is called progress.
