Parents say mandatory iPad use at school is hurting kids' grades, causing behavioral issues

In context: Child behavior experts have long warned about the harmful effects of excessive screen time and have urged parents to limit their children's smartphone use. Now, parents in California are starting to heed those warnings and are pushing back against the Los Angeles Unified School District over what they see as excessive reliance on technology in the classroom.

The movement to reduce screen time for school children is being led by a parent coalition called Schools Beyond Screens, founded by concerned mother Lila Byock. The group is campaigning against the mandatory use of iPads, Chromebooks, and other electronic devices in classrooms, arguing that they are negatively affecting students' academic performance.

Angry parents also claim that their children have developed behavioral problems after prolonged use of school-issued devices, often because the kids spend time playing video games or watching YouTube instead of doing schoolwork. Others warn that students are using the devices to access inappropriate content, including pornography and gratuitous violence.

Byock says her son's math grades dropped significantly in sixth grade because he struggled to stay on task while using his school-issued iPad. She also questioned why schools distribute iPads while banning smartphones, noting that "kids are using the school-issued devices in exactly the same way."

Other parents say the school-issued devices are dramatically increasing their children's screen time, despite their efforts to limit online activity at home. One mother noted that her first-grader wet himself four times in a month because he was so absorbed in his iPad that he wouldn't get up to use the bathroom.

While the school district claims students spend less than two hours per day on screens, parents argue that the estimate does not include iPad use. Teachers have also raised concerns about over-reliance on technology, especially as many students are allegedly using AI tools such as ChatGPT to complete their assignments.

United Teachers Los Angeles, a union representing more than 35,000 public school educators, is negotiating with the district to reduce classroom technology use. A middle school science teacher and union member who spoke to NBC News said digital learning tools can be helpful, but warned that requiring their constant use may do more harm than good.

It is the first major school district to face organized resistance to the expanded use of classroom technology. While child psychologists have welcomed the idea of more limited and supervised screen time, some district officials warn that scaling back technology could leave students at a disadvantage in an increasingly digital world.

Parents have almost no role in educating their children now. Kids are coming into school with 0 behavioral skills and a healthy addiction to their screens.

Parents: raise your kids! If your kid is sitting at home consuming youtube tot he point they wet themselves, or are looking up gore, violence, sex, ece, that is on YOU, as the parent. Not the school. If you want the state to handle everything, then give your kids up to CPS already and STOP HAVING KIDS YOU CANT RAISE.

Part of the problem is economics… these days, it requires 2 incomes to raise a family with the same standard of living it used to only require 1 income for back in the 70s and 80s… this means that there is more stress and less leisure time for these parents…

Still, one could (and should) argue that if you’re going to have kids, take the time and effort to do it properly…

Alas, the reality is that most people are not very bright - so haven’t prepared for the difficulties of raising children and are overwhelmed when they have them…

But but but we have billionaires and soon to be trillionaires.

No wonder Western civilization collapses under it’s weight. The structure it built since English’s Industrial revolution suffocates it. Greed, more greed.

Hehehe - the billionaires of the world have always had messed up kids - but that’s for different reasons… although… those children tend to be just as neglected (or more so) as their parents focus on making more billions instead of raising their kids…

Yeah, but part of the problem with that is that most married people today, want to get married, own a 3 bedroom house with a 2-3 car garage, multiple vehicles, huge tv's in every room and on and on.
Most couples today, don't want to start slowly and build up.
In the "boomer generation" you could afford a modest house, one car and survive on one income and the mother stayed home to RAISE THE CHILDREN. Today, parents, especially the ones that work and have to commute to work, spend less time with their kids. It's rush home, (pick them up at daycare), take them to their 3,402 after school activities, rush back home, shove some food into them and off to bed.
Weekends, the parents probably drop them with in-laws or neighbors, then go out on the town spending even more money.

You dont need 2 incomes for that.
-House with no AC
-On that part, house is small, sub 1000 sq ft
-cars with no AC or safety features at all, basic trim cheap second hand sedans
-one nice set of clothes for church, 1-2 for school
-few toys, maybe enough to fill a single box
-one TV
-one phone for the whole household
-Make all meals at home, eating out only on birthdays
-No internet, go play outside kids!
-No video games either

Even the poor today demand more niceties then the middle class had in the 70s. If you ACTUALLY live like most did in the 70s, you will find life is rather affordable and easily done on 1 income. Nobody actually wants to live like that, but its easily doable. Even if you have to make concessions, you can get a cheap business laptop for $2-300 that works fine for paying bills, and basic internet can be had for $10-15 per month or even just tethered to the single household mobile phone.

How many people do you know that can cheap fruit when in season to preserve for the winter? How many buy loads of potatoes and put them in the food cellar? Mend clothes to make them last longer? These things were all common place in the 70s but near nonexistent today. Sure, kids can cost money, but consider the biggest class having kids today, just like the 70s, was and is the LOWER class, the ones making under the national average. "it's too expensive" has never held up because the richer societies get, the fewer kids they have, despite good childhoods being affordable if done right.

This 100%, wish they’d move away from this. Heck my kid doesn’t even have homework anymore, it’s pathetic.
Doing homework doesnt actually improve anything for most kids. It's just repetitive time waiting that in the internet age is trivial to look up answers for. Our schools saw test scores go up when we did away with that nonsense.

It's actual nonsense. What gets me is how often these families insist on putting their children in daycare, often for as long as school is in session, so the mom can go work a job and use her entire wage to pay other women to raise her kids. It makes absolutely no sense.

In my friend group, 3 have bought homes, all 3 went for 2000+ sq ft that were at the edge of what the bank would loan them, and in my city there is ample supply of older smaller homes on the market at any given time. These friends now complain they are broke, taxes and insurance are so expensive, ece.

Another fun note, all 3 have $1000+ iphones and cars less then 3 years old. Just an interesting observation

This forum is intended for technical minded people. My issue with the iPads and computers brought home is the lack of privacy and the fact that the parents don't have control of the permissions on the devices. The school loads the software and the kids "minors" don't understand permissions. The data is 100% sold to third parties. You can't turn off the permissions and if you do your child will suffer from repercussions of that. You can't remove microphone access, Bluetooth or wifi scanning or any of the third parties. The systems are easy to hack. Think about what you are letting in your home..

Way too much tech in schools, and even at home for some kids. I restrict my childs screen time to 30-90 minutes per day depending on what we're doing and how I'm feeling. This time includes TV, YT, and games.

Schools have kids on the computer most of the day. They don't even teach anymore it seems. Kids do need tech in school, but just a little. It doesn't need to be all damn day.

Start with the 3 'R's, & bring back the hickory stick; at least the fear of it.

When kids became optional, it is likely that some, perhaps many couples began to consider them as annoyances. How much time and effort would they expend for kids they not only never wanted, but never welcomed.

As to the tech; it should be used sparingly. Teachers ought to teach. Now, nobody actually buys a set of encyclopedias; everything needed is on-line, along with many tempting distractions. When I was a kid, mom occasionally took us to the public library; maybe not specifically for school-related things, but, perhaps those were included in the trip. I recall being annoyed with the task of using our encyclopedias to do homework.

I remember having an 8:30 bedtime! I was attempting to argue for a 9pm bedtime, because I was 9 years old. :cold_sweat:

I suppose that if the devices were limited to school activities, they might not be so bad; but if the kids can change apps, that is the problem.
