The methodology is to store protected files encrypted on the hd.
To open the file then requires an unencrypt and open.
Frequently, PGP is the technology used, and I very much prefer FileAssurity OpenPGP as it integrates well with windows, adding an option
to the context menu FileAssurity OpenPGP-> {protect, unprotect, secure delete}
I find it useful for my XP laptop to ensure security from Identify Theft should my
laptop elect 'to go for a walk and not come home'.
