Mark I've been searching the internet for a resolution to this. I notice it doesn't happen with just CD ripping. Anytime I put a disk in this happens. Sometimes. I put in a disk to load some software last night and it froze three times in a row while it tried to load the contents. The below fix was suggested by someone at another site but it is not for XP.
To prevent this problem, follow these steps:
Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
On the Performance tab, click File System.
Click the CD-ROM tab.
In the Optimize Access Pattern For box, click the setting that matches the CD-ROM drive you are using. Click OK. Restart the computer when you are prompted to.
If steps 1-5 do not solve the problem, repeat steps 1-4. In the Optimize Access Pattern For box, click No Read Ahead. Click OK. Restart the computer when you are prompted to.
It's called Read Ahead and sounds kind of like what I have. How do I adjust this in XP?
