Hi again,

I've unistalled my Noron/symantec software and i've just had another crash. minidump is attached. any ideas?

thank you.

Your minidump crashes at naiavf5x.sys. This is part of your McAfee antivirus.

Check with the McAfee website for any patches/updates.

Why don`t you try uninstalling McAfee, and using the free AVG antivirus, and the free Sygate firewall.

You can get both these programmes from HERE and HERE

Once you have downloaded these programmes, disconnect from the internet, and uninstall McAfee.

Reboot your computer, and install Sygate first followed by AVG. Reboot your computer as directed, and then reconnect to the internet.

Regards Howard :)

Hi cmcf,

Howard's finding is correct it is faulty memory. It is no need to run memtest as the minidump tells it is a bit memory corruption. In total there have 3 minidumps which 1 bit memory corruption and one with two memory error.

You have to diagnostic which memory module is faulty.

Suggestion
1. Reseat the memory stick to another memory slot
2. Downclock the ram
3. Clean the dust inside the computer case
4. Make sure that the ram is compatible to the motherboard
5. Check the bios setting about memory timing and make sure that it is on

If it still crashes, diagnostic which memory stick is faulty
1. Take out one memory stick. If windows does not crash, the removed memory stick is faulty.
2. If you have only one memory stick, replace the ram

thanks again for all your help guys,

i can't understand why mt system crashes with Norton antivirus software and McAfee Antivirus software. Just seems a bit bizarre. I have updated both products too. I obvioulsy uninstalled one before i installed the other.

I have ordered another 480w PSU which may help me out in some way.

I'm still testing my memory to see if its the problem.

I had another crash last night and Windows reported a different error message than before so i wonder if its a different crash?

Tedster said:
why would a PS have to do with a incompatibility issue? I don't understand your logic.

I don`t think I`ve mentioned a compatibility issue.

Cpc2004 did mention to make sure the ram was compatible with the mobo.

Can you tell me to what you are refering Tedster?

Regards Howard :)

Hi guys

Update on the situation.

I have bought and installed a Artec 480w NeoPower PSU. Seems to work fine but am still getting random restarts with no warning.

I have also, as recommended, taking my antivirus off and put Spygate and AVG on. Seems to have stopped at least of few restarts(maybe)

I have also now swapped my RAM for another 1Gb of RAM from a PC I know has had no problems. Still got problems though so i'm assuming its not RAM. The RAM that i have taken out of my PC and put into the other one seems to be fine in that PC as its been running fine for a couple of days with no restarts etc.

One thing i have noticed is that i don't seem to get any minidumps anymore when i get a restart. Sometimes i get the blue screen with error message:

-Hardware Malfunctioned
-Call Your Hardware Vendor
-The system has halted

Another thing i've noticed is that it seems to happen more often than not when i'm playing music either with Win Media Player or iTunes.

Phew that was long read

Ok my 2 cents, everyone has been so helpful (Howard, cpc2004, Tedster), (Howard knows memory issues so listen to him).

But now I'm thinking mobo problems.
-Hardware Malfunctioned
-Call Your Hardware Vendor
-The system has halted

Also you changed RAM and still problems, but no probs with orginal RAM in 2nd comp. Soooo, it's not RAM....I think. It's not PSU now (well done with your choice btw). What can it be? Not RAM, not PSU. That leaves CPU, mobo, or OS. OS was mostly eliminated with Norton/McAfee removal etc.

What I want to suggest is increase your RAM voltage in BIOS menu. If a slight drift in mobo tolerances your RAM may not be stable at present voltage applied. Also to start set BIOS to default parametres, this may help. Then increase RAM voltage by 0.1 or 0.2 volts.

If this does not help, then check your mobo visually for faulty capacitors. The tall cylindrical type. They should be flat on top not rounded and definately no leaks.

Thanks for your help also,

I have, as suggested, pushed the voltage on my RAM.

I could only, however, push it upto 1.70v from 1.65v as there are only a few options in the BIOS.

I have also checked the mobo itself and can see no sign of buldging capacitors etc. or any other problems.

My next move is to purchase a mobo as i think we are all in agreement that it is a problem from the mobo.

Like i said before, i don't get any new minidumps now as my PC doesn't seem to restart itself anymore. Instead it just locks out(freezes) on the screen i would be currently viewing or i may get the HARDWARE MALFUNCTION blue screen.

Can anyone recommend a decent mobo now. :giddy:

Its all fun and games this!

Thanks for all the help and advice all of you guys have given me. ;)

Abit VT7 motherboard audio for VIA
300W PSU
Onboard sound - Realtek AC'97
ATI Radeon 9000 128mb

40GB

From the thw below website: Let's start with a quick recap with regards to the chipset, as the PT880 is VIA's first dual-channel DDR board for the Pentium 4 platform and it's also the first chipset from VIA that really can compete with Intel's i865 range. The major difference between the PT880 and the i865 is that the PT880 features an asynchronous bus design that makes it possible to mix and match processors and memory of different speeds more easily. This might not be a breakthrough feature, but it can be handy if you are upgrading your PC and can't afford to replace all the parts at once.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/24/review_abit_vt7/

Do you want to stay with the PT880 or go with the i865, I think it's now i875?
You need to answer this for yourself.

Good mobos are MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, DFI.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, your Radeon 9000 128Mb is a bit of a light weight now against the latest games out there, so you might want to look at a mobo with PCI-E graphics slot. You have to make sure your CPU socket remains the same though.

Well guys...i have replaced my motherboard and all is good since its been installed.

Many thanks to everyone who helped me on this one.

Much appreciated

Hmm I'm having the exact same problem with my VT7 motherboard.
Is there anyway to prove it's the motherboard (and not the ram) conclusively so I can get the manufacturer to replace it?

Hi there,

Unfortunately not. The only thing i can suggest is to run through all the testing and adjustments that i have done. Attach some minidumps so that one of the guys can have a look and see what sort of errors your PC is producing.

Hope this helps.
