I was wondering how these programs like Peer guardian and Protowall work. I used to use them before college and just accepted that they work due to lack of knowledge, but after taking my courses I don't understand how these programs work. And using these programs how does it protect the user's privacy? If anyone has any knowledge please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Phoenix Labs has this description of tit's Peer Guardian program:
PeerGuardian 2
PeerGuardian 2 is Phoenix Labs’ premier IP blocker for Windows. PeerGuardian 2 integrates support for multiple lists, list editing, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), making it the safest and easiest way to protect your privacy on P2P.

You'll find a discussion here of the likes and differences between the two programs here:

With regard to P2P, the TechSpot member kritius prepared the following information for reference:

P2P Warning!
(2 lines edited out by me as not applicable in this case)

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur

Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs (http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=26216) where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.
